Chapter One
“So are you going to tell me what really happened to you, or am I going to have to guess?”
I looked to see my best friend Danielle looking at me with her eyebrows lifted. But I can see deeper than that. I can see concern in her blue eyes. I know she’s worried about me, but I can’t let her know the truth. If she found out what really happened to me, she would never let it go.
“Renee’ please tell me what happened to your face. Look at you! You have a bruise on your cheek and it’s swollen, and you have a black eye! You look like hell!” Danielle told me.
But I faked a smile, which hurt a little, shrugged my shoulders and said, “I’m fine. I told you, I was just walking when I fell and hit my face okay? Calm down.”
She narrowed her eyes at me, still not believing a word of my story.
“Honest, I’m fine.” I reassured her.
She looked like she still didn’t believe me, but she let out a sigh and gave up rolling her blue eyes at me. She had been trying to get me to tell her what happened to my face all day. And I knew this wasn’t the end of it. She would try to get it out of me in about another hour or two. She moved her long blonde hair out of her face as she picked up another French fry and ate it. We were at lunch period. She was wearing a pink skirt that went a little above her knees. Her shirt was pink as well with sleeves that went about two inches below her shoulders. She had a dark pink sparkly heart on the left side of her shirt. She wore a pair of pink heels, but they weren’t that high at all. She was wearing the skirt and heels on a bet that she lost. She’ll usually wear some jeans. She was seventeen like me, but older by a few months.
If she knew what really happened to me, I don’t know what she would do. It happened last night, and I’m still sore from the beating.
*Flashback*
“I told you not to tell her you little bitch!”
I heard my father’s voice yell at me as another fist came down and hit me. I could see my little sister threw blurry eyes as she sat in the corner of the room with her hands over her ears as tears streamed down her face. She was telling my dad to stop yelling and to stop hurting me.
She was only four years old. She had pretty blue eyes with long brown hair. She looked just like our mother. Her name was Iris, and now her eyes were all red and puffy from her tears.
Our mom had died giving birth to her. And ever since she passed, dad started drinking, doing drugs, and not paying the bills. The only reason we haven’t gotten evicted yet, was because the first two years after she died, he still had his job. He got fired about a year and a half ago when he got caught doing drugs on the job. His boss gave him a week to quite the drugs and keep his job, or not quite and lose his job.
But my dad was so high, he cursed out his boss and said he would never quite. He was fired on the spot. So now, were high in debt. I’ve been working two jobs and still doing school. I’ve tried to keep up with the bills, but working at two different diners being only seventeen, doesn’t pay much.
