Chapter Two

I gripped the steering wheel tightly in my grip. Logan had just kissed me; and I kissed him back. He had seen the bruises on my stomach. He had heard me tell Iris that he’s not going to hurt us like he does. Now granite he doesn’t know who ‘he’ is, but I still feel like, I’ve already told him too much.

“I saw you and Logan kissing sissy.” Iris told me smiling. I looked at her through the mirror and smiled at her wiping away my tears. “You did?” I asked her. And she nodded her head giggling. I smiled back at her and said, “Well you know Iris, I might be going to see a movie with him this weekend. Would you mind if Miss Sadie watched you while I was gone?” She nodded her head eagerly and I laughed softly. I knew she loved it when Miss Sadie watched her. And I did too, it let me know that Iris was safe and in good hands while I was gone; and that she wasn’t near our father.

I very rarely ever left Iris at home with him. Last time I did, she had to go to the hospital because he beat her so badly. We had just told the people at the hospital that she was playing around and fell down from a hill hurting herself badly. They didn’t look that convinced, but they didn’t argue either. Thankfully, dad still had his job when that happened, so at least we could pay for the medical bill a little easier.

When we got to the house, I could hear my dad throwing things around inside. I gripped the steering wheel tighter again, then let out a sigh and undid my seatbelt. I knew Iris heard him throwing things too, because she stayed in her seat and started to cry as she looked at me with her big sad blue eyes as she practically begged, “Don’t make me go in there sissy. He’ll hurt us again.” She sobbed. But I gave her a half reassuring smile then said, “You’re going to go to Mrs. Nolan’s house while I’m at work okay?” She nodded then unbuckled her seat belt.

I picked her up and out the car as I carried her across the street to Mrs. Nolan’s house. I set Iris down and gave her her book sack as I held her hand and knocked on the door. When Mrs. Nolan came to the door, I smiled. Mrs. Nolan was a nice lady in about her mid sixties. She lived across the street from us with her husband and there cat. She had short hair that was starting to turn gray, and gentle brown eyes. “Hi Mrs. Nolan is it okay if Iris stays with you until I get home from work?” I asked her. Mrs. Nolan looked across the street and she could hear our father throwing things around and cursing and screaming at just the air. She sighed then said, “Of course she can. Come on sweet heart, I got some cookies and milk in the kitchen.” Mrs. Nolan said as she took Iris’s hand and led her inside.

“Do you need any clothes for her I asked?” But she just shook her head and said, “No, I still have some pajamas from last time she came over.” I smiled softly at her then said, “Thank you.” Then I bent down and gave Iris a big huge. She hugged me tight and whispered in my ear, “I’ll be okay sissy. You just make sure you come to get me at twelve.” I smiled and said, “You know I will.” Then I pulled back and kissed her forehead and told her, “You be good now okay?” She nodded, and then I walked back across the street. Mrs. Nolan led her inside and I heard the door close.

I took a deep breath, then got out my keys and opened the front door to my house. I walked inside and saw that it was a mess. ‘I’ll have to clean this all up later when dads asleep.’ I thought. I closed the door and locked it as I quickly went upstairs to change into my work uniform. I hadn’t gotten half-way up the stairs when I heard my dad yell out, “Renee’ Elisabeth Jones! Get down here.” I froze in my tracks and swallowed the lump in my throat.
