Excerpt No. 1:

My legs touched the cold cement steps of my porch as I sat down. The streets' lights hadn't adjusted to the night creeping up. I had on an old sweatshirt and my hands were numb from the chill. I closed my eyes, let out a silent sigh, and gazed up at the sky's ancient stories of Gods and War, fortune and hope; the unknown."

Excerpt No. 2:

"I reached for the door handle, the previous scene burned into my brain, making me retract from fear."

Excerpt No. 3:

"It is not acceptable for me to individualize myself in a generalized schooling system. It is not acceptable for me to take my time to feel comfortable. Why can I not be successful and dress how I please?"

Excerpt No. 4:

"Tears formed in his eyes as the sun warmed his skin for the first time in years."

Excerpt No. 5:

"He walked down the all too familiar beaten path, carrying the leaves that floated down to him from the wilting trees."

Excerpt No. 6:

About the unconditional love a dog has for its owner.

"Spots covered his body, head to toe a plethora of dots that conveyed what little grey area was left in his decision to love. The spots, like a warning light. One forgetful moment as you walk in the door can result in a body on the floor, covered in those spots."

Excerpt No. 7:

Distant, in flashes of red and blue, alert in their race to us, with their call penetrating the damaged vehicle, the ambulance."

Excerpt No. 8:

"Dead silence followed by an ominous rustle that set a concrete block on the chests of all the deer in the woods. Boomings of hearts everywhere drowned out the night, and the soft sigh of someone's breath ghosted by their ears."

Excerpt No. 9:

"The sky rumbled and rolled as its charcoal clouds ran across the sky. The metallic bolts shot across the sky like the flashes of a camera. The atmosphere brought the comfort that I typically seek in my father's metallic eyes. The silver clouds like my father's facial hair; grey in the sky, grey in his presence, grey enveloping me in warmth."
