I felt the tears well up in my eyes. I never meant to hurt him. When I looked up, I saw Connor pushing through the doors. His eyes asked a silent question- can I comfort you now? He sat down next to me and sighed heavily. A small tear dripped down my cheek. With his index finger on the side of my head, he used his thumb to brush off the tear. For a second I thought he would kiss me. His eyes were the color of seedlings sprouting in the spring. Then he looked down at the floor.

"Do you want to do homework at my place after school?"

"I...sure." Ethan would still be mad either way. He smiled, his eyes shining.

"OK, great. Meet me on the bus." I nodded. The end-of-lunchtime bell rang.

"Bye" he said, standing. I gave him a small grin before he walked through the doors again.

"Hey, can you help me with this equation?" I asked Connor. I was leaning against his bed with my textbook on my lap, staring intently at #21 of my homework. Connor sits next to me, pencil in hand.

"Yeah, sure. OK so remember, an equation is like a balanced scale" he explains, fiddling with his spiral notebook.

"So you have to subtract three from both sides..." his voice trails off, but he still gazes into my eyes.

"I got it now" I softly assure.

"I know this girl..." he said, changing the subject.

"She's really smart, funny, and pretty." I arch my eyebrows.

"I think she's amazing, but she doesn't seem happy." Cocking my head, I say,

   "Oh?" He nods.

"I want to make her happy."

   "What's her name?"

"Cherish." His voice is barely a whisper now, but I hear him clearly. Connor leans down and kisses me softly.

He breaks away after a few seconds, his hand still on my cheek. I hadn't stopped him. I'd kissed him back.

"I should go now" I said, beginning to gather my materials.

"No don't. I'm sorry-" I brushed his hair back.

"Don't be. I just have to figure things out." He looks confused.

"Bye" I get up. I leave him there and head home, my lips tingling.
