I pushed the doorbell. My index finger lingering momentarily upon hearing the chimes echoing. The large front doors opened revealing a woman possibly in her early 30s? She had soft wavy blond hair and blue eyes. She looked NOTHING like my sleaze bag of a dad.
Before I could even gather my thoughts I was enveloped in a hug. I immediately stiffened feeling uncomfortable that a total stranger was hugging me. She let go of me and began to speak,
"Hi you must be Brooklyn, I am your aunt, EMMA!"
Too stunned to say anything I just gave her a curt nod. "Come in, Come in! We have so much we need to talk about!"
I followed her into the massive mansion. While I was living in squalor for more than half of my life she had been living it up in Cali. Emma led me into a living room which in itself was the size of my old house. She took a seat near the fireplace and motioned for me to sit down.
"Sorry for being overexcited it's just that I can't have kids, so I was over the moon when I found out about you!"
"Found out about me?" I questioned.
"You see your ass hole of a dad, my brother, decided to cut off all communication with our family a couple of weeks after you were born...
So let me tell you about myself. I am the head fashion designer and creator of a popular clothing company and I am 34."
She then looked expectantly at me. Like I was supposed to reveal my life story to her.
One of the most crucial lessons that was taught to me at Military School was that trusting anyone outside of your allies can be lethal. So who was I to trust Emma? Abiding by the lessons taught to me at the school allowed me to become strong and forget the weak Brooklyn, and there was no way in hell Emma was going to tear that down.
I stayed silent. I was not gonna let her get any information from me.
"Ok! So anyways, the California Child Relations Center thought I should go over a few things with you. You will be attending River Hawking's High school as an 11th grader. You will be living with me for the time being, how EXCITING!! So do you have any questions, like any at all?"
"Why couldn't you just sign the forms to let me stay at the Military School?" I stated sharper then I intended to. I knew the answer inside but I still hadn't come to terms with it.
Emma was slightly taken aback "Well Brooklyn, Sweetie you violated their firm rules for two years, so it wasn't my choice and it wasn't until your father died that I found out where you were."
