I glanced around at my new surroundings, not really knowing what I expected from this "new" school. It looked almost exactly the same as my old school except painted different colors, blue and silver. I liked the color scheme, but that's not really what mattered... I shoved my hand in the back pocket of my shorts, breaking a perfectly manicured nail. So long for that! Those nails were too flimsy and impractical anyway. I knew that my promise would not be hard to put in place here. I knew the dynamics of high school very, very well. My mouth curled up in a me like smirk as Kris and I headed to the principal's office to meet our escorts for the tour. This should be interesting...
There were 4 students there, 2 guys and 2 girls. They all looked like polar opposites of each other though, which confused me big time. Was the principal just trying to introduce us to different groups? One of the girls stood out to me, Juliette Davidson, as someone I might befriend to fulfill my vow. She looked popular enough with a face of caked on makeup, white blonde hair perfectly done, clothes just slutty enough to make her look scandalous, and a vicious gleam in her sparkling blue eyes. The other girl... not so much.
She was very delicate and petite with thick shiny long black hair in a loose braid over her shoulder. She also had the most captivating amber eyes that stood out and were framed by thick framed glasses that resembled my own. I had opted for contacts though this morning. Her book bag was labeled Remi Baajewi, not the most common name on the market. Remi looked nice enough, but she was someone I would unfortunately have to ignore for the time being. She would not help the mission. Next, I looked at the boys. No problem detecting who was who here.
The first boy was tall, lanky and disheveled with reddish brown hair. He was wearing dark colored baggy clothes, all black Vans, and a black beanie. It looked like he was going for the slacker look. I hate those guys, all like we don't care, all the freakin' time! Everyone should have an aspiration or goal for life at this time. We were seniors for goodnness' sake! The second boy was much cleaner with jeans and a white t-shirt that fit him well and a Letterman jacket that showed off how muscular he was. He had close cropped blonde hair and a weird shade of gray for his eyes that were narrowed and sharp. Jock, obviously! We all studied each other for a few minutes until Juliette finally sighed, bored with this already. "Let's do this thing so I can get out of here, got it?" She strutted out of the room, leaving the rest of us scrambling after her. Yeah, this was definitely the girl!
After seeing the numerous classrooms and going over both of our schedules a few times, we dispersed in the front of the school, Juliette throwing a wink at me. Score! I turned my attention to Remi, who just kind of gave me a confused look, then grabbed a book out of her bag and started walking back toward the school. The boys gave each other murderous glares and stalked away, leaving us by ourselves yet again. We each heaved a huge sigh. I could tell we were thinking the same thing. All high schools are the same.
When we reached the hotel room, we saw that Colleen was still asleep and the kids were watching Nickelodeon. Krissy immediately plopped down beside Cass and whipped out her phone, probably texting her teammates back in New York. I knew my sister was trying hard not to show that she missed our old home, but it was easy to see through her flimsy facade. Kris had always loved the snowy winters, busy streets, and the regular hustle and bustle of big city life. She also felt connected to our parents there, but here I could tell Kris wasn't truly happy. It just wasn't her type of place, while I was loving it. The warmth of the sun making me look tanner already, the new people, the guilt almost completely faded. I sat down beside my twin and looped an arm around her shoulder, like we used to do when our parents were alive. Kris smiled tightly and stood up, shrugging my hand from her shoulder. "Guys, big news! Our stuff just arrived from New York and we can finally move into our house!" I cringed from how pain filled her eyes were. No one should hold on to so much pain. It was enough to kill.
