Bonnie woke up with a start. She sat in the darkness for a bit before sighing, "Marceline, I know you're there!"
A  brief wind swept by and a black bat transformed into a pale teenage  girl with her long dark hair tickling Bonnie's nose. She snickered  hovering near Bonnibel's bedpost.
"Bonnie, it's been a while...  let's go hunting!" She flicked on a switch that she thought was for the a  night light but actually turned on a fan. Bonnie's hair whipped round  and round her face.
She groaned and mumbled something about princess  duties and official business. Marcy blew a raspberry and did a  somersault in the air, "Come on Bonnie, your kingdom won't blow up in an hour... probably..."
PB turned over in her sleep, a clump of her bubblegum hair falling onto the bridge of her nose.
Marcelina hovered over her for a while before experimentally sucking on some of her bubblegum hair.
"Your hair taste good... but with a few magical drops from soda pop springs it could taste even better,"
Bubblegum  groaned but didn't push her away. "I know what you're trying to pull  Marce but it's not going to work, I need to do so many-" She yawned,  "Stuff tommorrow and you're donking up my sleep scheds, like stop eating  my face you butt!"
Marceline chuckled, "I never was going to eat  your face Bonnibel, where ever would you get such an accusation from?"  She pressed her cold cheek endearingly on Bubblegum's indignant one.
"Oh  alright... One hour Marceline!" She finally gave in, crossing her arms  and allowing herself to be pulled out the window and wrapped around  Marceline's back.
"Where are we going by the way?"
"I dunno, I  think I saw an old soup truck not too far from here..." Marceline  squinted and stuck her tongue (in bubblegum's mou-) in the air.
Twenty  minutes later, in the middle of the desert, sure enough an empty truck  stood half buried from the last sand storm, proudly rusting in the cool  desert breeze.
Bubblegum smiled. "Marcy this isn't a soup truck,"  Using the cloth from her nightie she rubbed the truck sign, "It says  Sally-Anne's TACO truck,"
"Oh," Marceline hung upside down for a bit. "I wonder why I thought it said soup..."
"You goof," Bubblegum bent down and kissed her nose as she hung upside down.
After Marceline dug out a little more of the truck, she and Bonnie lay down inside the back with the doors flung open.
"It's  a clear night with no obscurations of the moon, perfect for lab  testing..." Mused Bonnie counting stars. She turned over and saw Marcy's  face, "I mean it's a beautiful night out... um, in general..."
She pointed to the biggest star and then pointed to Marcy who rested her head on her shoulders. She touched her arm.
"Are you cold?" She asked.
"I'm  always cold..." Marceline closed her eyes for a second, took a deep  breath then opened them again. "But then so is ice and ice is cool, I  guess,"
"You're cooler than ice Marce!" Bubblegum joked, nudging her arm. Marceline laughed weakly, avoiding her gaze. Bonnie felt her bones crease as she felt deflated again, was it always like this? Forever treading on broken ice... She couldn't really remember a time when she didn't feel this way.
"Hey Marce, can I ask you a question?"
Marceline nuzzled her, intrigued.
"Will you be here forever?"
Marceline stopped burying herself in Bubblegum's neck and thoughtfully bit her lip.
"What do you mean?"
"Well...  Finn won't be here forever, or... Jake, my candy people might... not  last..." Bonnie struggled to find the words to express how she felt,  which were very rare for her. She took a deep breath, "I mean,  eventually... who will end up alone?"
Marceline subconsciously reeled back from  Bonnie, her face twisted in confusion but hidden behind her thin black  hair  like a funeral veil across her face. Why was Bonnie thinking this?  How long had she been thinking this?

More thoughtful but mainly anxious biting. "Why does it matter?" Her voice rose slightly like she was going to make a light joke but her mind was too dark.

"I might outlive everyone, but then I could not, I  could fade away when the time is right... or I could not. Have you seen a  vampire die? Have you seen a candy die?"
Bonnie didn't answer but  instead placed a hand on both of Marceline's cheeks. She felt her touch  warm her body for a moment before she felt the heat being drawn from her  fingertips.
Things like this troubled Bonnie, it wasn't right. It  wasn't science.  She gently pulled her face towards hers and held it  there for as long as she could manage, like holding stinging ice to her  cheek. Marceline just engulfed the warmness from her body.
"Bonnie I'm sorry I didn't mean for it to come out like that,"
"No..."  Hot sugary tears, stopped her from talking. They ran down her face and  merged in the crack of their twisted grip.
"No... That's not it, everything is changing, we don't know  how long this crazy world will last..." Whispered Bonnie her voice  cracking. "And the spacemen..."
Marcelino stared at her, unblinking, with confusion written across her face.
"I  sent sp- I sent candies into space... " Bubblegum swallowed painfully,  "To try a colonise a planet, I nearly wiped out an entire species, if  Treetrunks didn't stop me, heh, I sound like a villian..." She gave  Marceline a joking smile but she took a while to return it.

Her sugar-coated smile seemed to melt as she allowed herself to fall back and her head hit the back of the truck.
"Ugh, I  feel like I'm going mad, everything I do... I try to do for the greater good Marce,  I just... Well its hard to find out if its for the greater good of the  candy kingdom or myself, I feel like someone said once, don't mix your  personal life with work but those two worlds are so intertwined I cant  even pull them apart anymore... if they were even separate to begin  with..."
Marceline imagined two thick strands of blue and pink  bubblegum joined to together like marshmallow twists, she tried to  visualise someone pulling it apart. She grimaced, what all candy has in  common is that in their most raw form they are completely sticky.

"I've  always seen the candy citzens as family, they were my personal life,  they are my work. So how do I when I'm working too hard or when I'm not  working hard enough?"

"Bonniebel stop, you are always  working hard enough, I know you see it like it is, but it's not only the  candy kingdom that makes up you. Science, friends like Finn, Jake, Lady  Raincorn... The Ice King and his weird hobbies, making breakthroughs.  Jamming out. I think you you do enough work for ten people... for ten  years every week and because of that, when you are 'relaxing' you worry  like the moment you're gone, the candy kingdom with blow up, like the  minute you turn your back!"

"Did I ever tell you about that time me and Finn snuck out of that sleepover-"

"No!  But it doesn't matter, the point is you're amazing Bonnie, and you can  do anything so... stop worrying about everything okay?"

With  hesitation, Bonnie nuzzled Marceline's forehead, then her closed eyelids, then  her nose leading to her mouth. Marceline whispered something sweet under  her breath, and slid her hand under her bubblegum hair and pulled her  closer. Their hot and cold breath seemed to mix to create something  exhilarating as they exchanged sweet doting kisses before pulling each other further into the van.
Bonnie felt her face grow hot with Marceline nibbling the outside of her  ear. She wedged the doors shut with her feet and slowly felt her worries tear away  as she relaxed in Marceline's arms. Marceline pulled her closer and  drowsily wiped away any tears left on her face.

"Do you want to  go back to the candy kingdom tonight?" She asked into the darkness.  There was a long pause then Bonnie shifted her legs that were tangled  with Marceline's. "No,"
"Okay, I'm cool with that,"
Bubblegum snorted, "Yeah, like you didn't plan this from the start!"
"To make you cry? Never," Bonnie couldn't see her properly in the darkness but she felt Marceline's gaze from above her.
"You didn't make me cry Marce, I just... I think too much and I'm sorry for that, and I plan for the future too much I'm sorry for that too-"
"Don't ever be sorry for that Bonniebel Bubblegum, It'll save our lives one day... remember you were the one who showed me why life was so important in the first place-"
Bonnie snorted, "Yeah, in a lab!"
"Ok so it wasn't the most romantic or heartfelt place in the world but... I liked it, actually I think I liked you... ugh I sound like a cheese ball... Stop smiling you butt!"
"Ah! It's too late you admitted it! Mwhaha you fell for my ingenious plan!!!1!1" Bonnie teased.
Marceline playfully pounced on her and tickled her until she pleaded for mercy. "Okay! Okay fine I'll never mention the time that Marceline the vampire hahaha (stop it hehe) - vampire queen admitted her true feeling to yours truly (omg geroff me Marceline!)"
Marceline released her laughing, "If you do-"
"-If I do, feel free to abandon me in the middle of the desert like you and LSP did with breakfast princess,"
Marceline blushed a little, a spot of deep crimson appearing on each cheek. "You know about that?"
"Hey word gets round! A little BMO even told me about the Finn dating/pack hunting movie night a while back,"
Marceline thought for a while for an appropriate response.
"Well he's a butt."
