PB woke up in a taco truck in the middle of desert and for a moment there all she could think about was how dry her mouth was. It was only till she turned her head that she saw that the lean bundle of clothes she thought she was sleeping next too was in fact Marceline who wasn't exactly the early bird. For a moment, PB savoured the quiet and peacefulness that surrounded them before her head switch back into leader mode. Her subjects! Her mostly loyal subjects were left to their own devices for about six and a half hours. She had to get back.
It didn't take long wafting all over the place for her to realise that she had no idea where she was and even less of an idea of where to go. She quickly ran back to the van and gently tapped Marceline with her foot.
"Wha? Ugh five more hours," She moaned into the floor.
"No." Said Bubblegum firmly,
"I need to get back to the candy kingdom before they donking skronk up the place and according to my calculation that will be in..." Bubblegum quickly sliced some calculations in the sand. "Ugh, ten minutes ago," Bubblegum face palmed and Marceline took the opportunity to snake her way around her waist. "Sounds like a sticky situation," She hissed.
(Finger guns)
She gently pushed Marceline away from her face and looked at her pleadingly, "Marceline please, my candy subjects are freakin' adorable but they are like little globs learning about fire, without a teacher Marce, they will go ba-nay-nay cray-cray in less than a minute, like shmplosions and stuff!"
Marceline rolled her eyes. "Okay, okay..." She peeked outside and hesitated. "Um any chance you brought some sunscreen?"
For a moment Bonnie didn't say a word. She pressed her lips so tightly, not a single breath could escape her mouth fortress and pressed her arms at her side. The internal scream raging inside of her, was only shown through her red cheeks and sweaty palms. "Marce..." She said slowly.
"You're telling me, you dragged me out into the middle of the desert and forced me to stay the night without any protection for the morning?!"
"Woah, woah woah," Marceline interrupted. "I've never forced you to do anything, I just wanted you to get away from all that jazz for one night, is it too much to ask for just one night away with my-"
"Marceline, everything I've worked for, every time I couldn't be here or there doing freaking princess duties could be at stake here!"
"Oh my bad, here I was thinking there was something greater at stake here..."
"Don't be like that Marce, y'know being a leader-"
"Comes first? No seriously, does it Bonnie because if I'm just another problem on a list to take care of please, I'd like to know,"
Bonnie bit her lip in annoyance. She didn't know what to do or what to say, it seemed like everything she was trying to explain was the wrong. Glob, she hated when Marceline was being difficult.
Marce stared at her visibly hurt before her pain turned into a scowl.
"Wait, I'm sorry I didn't mean to say that aloud!"
"Well it doesn't matter, you still meant what you said..."
"No I didn't mean it like that! I just wanted you to understand that being a leader means sometimes you have to sacrifice times with the people you care about for- for-" Marceline stared at her, daring her to continue, daring her to assume that she didn't know how much Princess Bonniebel Bubblegum was sacrificing hang out with her.
"Obviously I know you understand Marce," Assured Bonnibel like she could read her thoughts, "Well...to a certain extent-"
"Oh I understand alright," She spat, almost unable to control the different emotions filling up inside her.
Bubblegum princess
Made of black licorice tar
So sweet and so heavyWhat did I ever do
To anger you?
Suffocating blackness
For my everlasting blue
What did I ever doTo anger you?
"Marceline..." It was too much. Bonnie stopped trying to explain everything. It wasn't working, whatever this was... it was falling apart.
You can dance a night for me
You can be my queen
But when sun comes up
You leave
You leave me
Why do this to me?
"I didn't mean, I- You know that I-" Tears was falling, they just didn't know when to stop.
La-la la la-la la
Your sugary sweetness
It can melt my heart
La-la la la-da-da
Then why do my tears keep falling, falling, falling
On your sweetest-
On your s-sweet-Marceline choked a little and abandoned her song. Soundlessly, she stood up and turned into her bat form; her lack of eating yesterday making her feel slightly weak and queasy. She looked as if she wanted to say something to Bonniebel but then closed her mouth and sharply turned her back to her. Before Bubblegum could stop her, Marce sped off into the desert, the blistering sun burning down on her skull; painful blisters popping up on her black velvety skin.
Marceline didn't get very far before her wings gave out due to the many holes that had been burned through them. She managed to shelter herself under a parched palm tree and tried to drink the red from one of the shoes she was wearing. She retched at the revolting taste and decided she wasn't that desperate yet.
Pulling her feet closer to her body, all she could do was watch as the sun lowered over the itself over the horizon. Streaks of pink, orange and yellow soon danced across the sky around dusk as she willed her aching body to its feet.
Once the sun was barely visible in the sky, she tugged at one of the palm tree's dying leaves and wrapped it around her battered wings.
She flew home that night, broken and slightly bruised.
