(Temporary Home)
I constantly stared out of the window at the passing cars, trees, and patches of concrete. Between that and the music I can keep myself under control. I'm sure it was Twenty One Pilots or something, but I was drowning it out with my thoughts.
There was silence all the way to Sammy's house. Her mom knew that right now was not the time for me to explain myself. The longer it is quiet, the longer I have to build my walls. Those are the only things that will protect the soft inside from becoming to scarred and tough. They keep the crazy, scared, and confused feelings contained deep below.
Soon we arrived at her small three roomed house. As we jump out of the car, Sammy raps me in a hug. We walk up arm and arm to her front door where her brother Connor stood with his arms crossed.
"Catherine?" He said confused.
"Hi Connor", I said with my head down, giving him a hug.
His mom just shook her head, telling him not to ask yet. He mouthed 'oh' and walked me inside.
I sat down on the couch and rubbed my aching head. Sammy's mom sat next to me rubbing my back.
"Honey? What's going on? Why did you run away?" She asked softly.
I knew she would ask eventually. I mean, she drove an hour and a half to pick me up.
"I was done with the constant beating and abuse from my dad and my brother. I couldn't handle it anymore." I said. I couldn't look her in the eyes, I just covered them, feeling her sympathetic looks.
"Oh, I'm so sorry." She said.
"Don't be. Please, you saved me. That's all I could ask for." I told her.
"You are safe with us, but you do realize they will go looking for you." She stated.
"Yes, I know. I just need time to build a case. I have evidence all around the house. Do you have a notebook?" I asked.
"Yes, here you go." She handed me a small notepad and a pencil.
"Thank you." I said.
"You're welcome. I have a good friend that is a social worker, can she help you?" She asked.
"That would be amazing." I said.
"Okay, I'll call her as soon as possible. I'll leave you alone to your thoughts." She then got up and left.
I got up with my notepad in hand. I walked slowly down the hallway to Sammy's room. When I got to there, she was laying down to go back to sleep. I set the stuff down on top of my bag and crawled into the bed with her. She rolled over to look at me, smiling while she moved the hair out of my face.
"You know, I missed you. I didn't expect you to be coming here so soon though." She said chuckling.
We both laughed as she wrapped her arms around me.
"Yeah I know. I'm sorry you had to get up so early." I told her feeling guilty.
"Catherine... Don't you dare be sorry. Friends are here to help you. You were in trouble and needed help. Mom and I are more than happy to help you, anytime you need it. We know that you wouldn't call us to get you if you didn't need it, because you didn't want us to pick you up the times before." She said.
"I know. Thank you." I quietly said.
She just looked at me with her blueish-green eyes. Her blonde, short, straight hair was in her face. I lightly moved it back behind her ear. She giggled as a light pink blush came upon her face like it always does when she beautifully smiles.
"You're welcome best friend." She whispered.
She took a small nap, I stayed up and worked on the notepad so I would still be tired tonight. Otherwise, I would be up all night again thinking about things.
When she got up we walked around playing Pokemon Go. She got excited every time she found a Pokemon in her room. We messed around listening to Twenty One Pilots again. We were dancing around, laughing, singing along, and goofing around. It was the most fun I've had in a while.
We finally got tired and plopped down on the bed. I looked over at her, a smile on both of our faces.
"Thank you." I said.
"No Catherine, thank you." We both smiled and laughed.
I know, as a fact, this is the closest to home I've ever been.
