I had a horrible night's sleep and it just had to be the first day of school. I started my Senior year, Katie and I were supposed to graduate together but obivously that wasn't going to happen. My sister, Logan, was hogging the bathroom, doing her make-up and whatnot, knowing I had to be out of the door first.
"C'mon Logan, I need to get ready!" I yelled at her through the door. That's the first I said something since yesterday. You could her the sadness in my voice.
"Hold on, Ya dipstick!" She told me, knowing she couldn't curse while mom was home. For an 8th grader, she had a quick toungue." I still gotta do my eyeliner!"
Fuck it, I'll use Mom's bathroom.
I get in the bathroom and I through my usual routine of taking a shower, brushing my teeth, and swooping my hair back into a quiff from it's natural state of being a very curly fringe.
I went downstairs to see my brother,Wilson, eating his normal bowl of Cheerios. He was going to Middle school for the first time, other than open house, and I could tell he was nervous.
"Hey, Will, you'll be okay, trust me." I tried to cheer him up.
"But, what if they don't like my hair?" He pointed to his brown hair that went to his ears.
"They can't judge you if you haven't done your hair yet. You'll live, trust me."
"Okay, big bro!" He ran out of the kitchen to do his hair, which was quite similar to mine. Then, Ms. Pretty princess herself, comes downstairs.
"You look good."
"Thanks, you look tired."
"No shit, Log" She rolled her eyes at me.
"Anyway, are there any waffes left?"
"Yes, look in the freezer."
Then I hear my other sister crying. I run upstairs to go get her and on the way, I stubbed my toe.
"God damn it! Hold on, Annie!" I finally make it up the stairs and grabbed my sister, who's 5 months old, and take her downstairs so she can eat.
"Here, mom." I hand her Annie. I have to take over more responiblity since my mom broke her leg not to long ago.
"Thank you, Chase. You better get going, or you're gonna be late!" I looked at the clock. 6:45. Perfect. Enough time to get Logan and Wilson to school without being late myself. I'll probably have time to grab me some breakfast from McDonald's or something.
"C'mon guys, we gotta go!" I call to my other siblings. Wilson bolted to me, while Logan took her precious time. We loaded into my jeep and I started driving to Preston Road Middle School.
I drop them off and I stop by Chick-fil-a to get me some breakfast and wonder how they can say "My Pleasure" seven times in one sitting. Katie and I used to joke about that. I'm suddenly overcome with sadness again.
I make it school without being late. I walk down the hall to my class when I run into Katie's sisters, Sophie and Rafferty. I completly forgot about how they must feel, losing their sister.
"Hey guys, how you feeling" They both look like they've been crying though, Sophie looks like she's been crying more.
"We have not been good. I don't like that the first day of school was the day after her funeral. Leslie has been out of control." Leslie is their four year old sister. I couldn't believe how she must be reacting to not having her oldest sister there anymore.
"If you guys need any help, I'll be around." I walked away from them and go to class. I make it to class and sit in the only availible seat. Next to her. Jay.
Jay was Katie's friend. We didn't exactly start on a good note. She was basically was one of those friends that hangs out with you one day then never talks to you the next.
One day, she left Katie on the streets and Katie called me crying. I picked her up from the curb and never forgave Jay. And here I am, sitting next to her.
"Hello, Jay." I can feel her glare.
"Hi Pikachu!" Let me explain. She saw me Pokemon GO with Katie and started calling Pikachu. I haven't been successful of getting her to stop.
"Did you hear about Katie?" She flips short blue hair to look me in the eyes. She expression of worry on her face.
"No. What happened?"
"Katie's gone. She was hit by a car and killed." I say on the verge of tears. She burst into tears and console her. I'm being nice to her because she just heard friend died.
"What's wrong?" A girl named Maxine asked us as we were both crying now.
"You know Katelyn Maxwell?" I say between sobs.
"Katie? The girl you're always hanging out with? Yeah I know her."
"She died three days ago. Jay just found out." I looked at Jay, who was nuzzling her face in my chest, her gray beanie basically hitting me in the face.
"Oh, that's so sad. I'm so sorry for your loss." She looked genuinely saddened from hearing that. She stops looking at me and looks at the floor.
"Thanks Maxy." She turned back around and I wrap my arms around Jay as my tears start to subside. She finally leaves my arms when the chorus teacher, Mrs.Watson, walks in.
"Hey y'all! You all look tired, wake up a lil' bit!" She's from the south, Texas to be exact, but came to Canada to pusue her dreams of become a teacher. Her southern accent is strong, but she has a very urban accent, too.How she ended up in Toronto, we don't know.
"I bet y'all have already heard about Katelyn. She unfortunately passed away because a car hit her." All the vivid memories flew to my mind and I lost it. I hear an audible gasp flow over the room as Mrs.Watson ran over to me.
"It's okay, boo. I miss her too, don't cry." She tries to console me, but Jay beats her to it. She wraps her arms around me and makes it her all to console me. Mrs.Watson makes her way to the tissues. Maxine makes it her job to whisper things like "It's okay" and "We'll make it through this"
Disgusting. I was digusting. Tears were rolling down my face, snot was flying out of my nose, and I was basically drooling because my mouth was hanging open. Disgusting.
Jay was really trying to help, but remembering Katie's body, there in the road and bloody, was something that couldn't be helped.
It got to a point where my sobs were subsiding and tears were just running out of my eyes. The classroom is silent. Only sounds of my small sniffles filled the room.
We ended up getting a free day because my cry fest. Apparenty, Jay and I have the same periods together. I honestly never thought I would become close with her, after what she did, but she's actually really cool.
At lunch, she's was talking about one of her favorite bands, Panic! at the disco, I think it was. I cut her off, unexpectedly.
"You didn't know."
"Didn't know what, Pika" She let a nervous laugh.
"Katie was a lesbian. She couldn't find someone for years and I thought you would be the one, the one to take her on dates and kiss her, the one to love her. I imediately thought different that one night, when I found her outside your apartment, crying. She never told me the full story, but I assumed that you had hurt her feelings or something. I had never seen her cry like that and never trusted you again. But now, as I get to know you, you seem to care a whole lot about her and, at the moment, you seem like you would never hurt her, at all. I don't know, but she considered you as a 'girlfriend' and you seem like you love her too."
She took a moment to take all of that in. She looks at me with a sad expression.
"She what?" Her voice trembled and her blue hair flew in her face from the air conditioning.
"She loved you, Jay"
"Katie loved me?"
