Y/n's POV

"I just don't get it. Why does Professor Snape hate me so much?" I quiz.

"Why would you say that?" Hermione asked me as her, Ron, Harry, and I made our way down to the dungeon.

"Oh I don't know, Hermione. Probably because he seated me next to Malfoy," I remind her.

"Y/n's got a point," Harry agreed. "But I thought you were the only Gryffindor he actually liked."

"I thought so too. Maybe I did something to peeve him off," I suggest. "Seriously though, out of all the students in the class, why did I have to be seated next to Draco Malfoy?"

"You shouldn't be the one talking, L/n," Draco spoke as he brushed past my friends and I. "I can't believe Snape placed me next to you. I'd rather put myself out of my misery."

"The feelings mutual, Malfoy," I retort as the five of us entered the classroom. I slid into my seat next to Draco, dropping my satchel on the floor next to me. Harry, Hermione, and Ron took their seats amongst the other students, and a few minutes later, it was time for class to start.

"Open up to page 292 in your books," Snape commanded and took up a position at the front of the class. "This potion is your assignment today. The pair of students who make the best bottle of Doxycide, and write a decent explanatory essay on it's effects, will be given a reward that I am still undecided on. Your partner for this assignment will be the person sitting next to you. You may all begin."

"Well this is gonna be so much fun," I mutter sarcastically.

"Hey, I don't like this either. But I'm not one to fail, especially a potion's assignment. So lets just get this over with. What are we brewing today?" Draco questioned and leaned over to get a look at my book, which I hadn't opened yet.

"Didn't you hear Snape? He clearly said Doxycide," I recall and flip open my textbook. "Were you not listening? Honestly, Malfoy, just tell me now if I'm gonna have to do this whole assignment myself."

"I just got lost in thought. Sorry," Draco apologized.

"Whoa. Was that an apology from you? I think that may be unheard of," I joke and retrieve my parchment, quill, and ink from my bag.

"Oh shut it, L/n," Draco countered playfully and stood up. "I'm regretting it already. I'll go grab the ingredients for the potion."

"Yeah yeah yeah. Oh, and Malfoy? If you happen to get lost, that wouldn't be the worst thing," I tease.

A minute or two later, Draco came back with our ingredients and set them down on the table. I scanned the bottles, making sure we had everything, and once I confirmed that we did, the two of us got started. Surprisingly, Draco and I worked well together. I read off the amounts for the ingredients from my book, and Draco added everything to the cauldron. After mixing everything together and finishing off the potion, we bottled it up, put our names on the label, and set it off to the side to focus on our essay.

"Is it just me thinking this, or was that a pretty easy assignment?" Draco implored.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with you," I concur. "Perhaps it's because we're the two best students in this class. Honestly, being partnered with you makes me realize how much I would've hated to be partnered with anyone else. I mean, Seamus and Neville? That's just a disaster waiting to happen."

"My word. Look at them," Draco instructed. I turned around in my seat, and upon seeing the two Gryffindors, I covered my mouth to keep from laughing. They had already managed to mess up their potion, which was spewing a dark red smoke. Once I was facing forward, I let out a soft chuckle into my hand.
