Three: The Student With Red Eyes

I walk past a group of students playing dodge ball.

"Ouch!!!"

I turned my head. I was hit by those playing dodge ball. I adjusted my glasses and glanced sideward.

"Are you alright?" The student picked up the ball and the moment I met his gaze, he turned pale as if he just saw a ghost.

"Ano...."

He take a step backwards.

"Ano....emm.."

I raised my brow.

"Sum—sumimasen!!" He ran like his life depends on it.

What's his problem? Then I realized. My eyes. My red eyes. The thought saddened me. What's the issue of a person having eyes of red color? When I was a kid, I really thought my eyes are pretty cool. I mean, I don't look like I'm gonna swallow him alive. I sighed. I think I just did a deadly glare.

"This not going good, Ruru."

I brushed down my bangs with my fingers and continue to walk towards my classroom. My classmates must've known each other already and I feel like a transfer student all in all. I am literally shaking as I hold the door handle. This is it. No holding back. I crossed my fingers.

I CAN'T SLIDE THE DOOR OPEN. I tried harder. Nope. I take a big breath and

SLAM.

First impression. FAILURE.

My heart beats like racing with a fast horse and I can barely move. I seriously don't wanna look to their faces right now. Urgh.

I manage to walk towards the front with my head down. This is my problem. I haven't been associating with many people because I just stayed in the shrine talking either to grandma, Mr. Henri, or Ruru. I'm afraid that my nervousness would make me snap at people.

I deadpanned, "Good morning. I'm Mitsuo Hanari."

"Ermm... Welcome Hanari. Please choose a seat."

I straightly went to a vacant seat at the middle row. Then the teacher continued the lesson.

"What a rude entrance."

I side-eyed the student who said it and she quickly focus back on the teacher. Yeah. I have scary eyes. HAHAH.. how I love it. Mark the sarcasm.

"She's a total loner. Eccentric, introvert, antisocial."

"Hard to reach."

"Let's just pretend we don't know her existence."

The last sentence hit me hard. I grip my pencil tighter. Maybe it's better to keep up how they think I am. Because in the real world, I just learned an undeniable fact: being alone is easier than making new friends.

Throughout the whole day, I mentally banged my face on a concrete wall. Over and over.
