Chapter One

Beep, beep, beep. Beep, beep, beep.

Ugh, why?

Beep, beep, beep.

I struggled to open my tired eyes and slowly rolled over to hit the button that would silence my annoying alarm. I let out a heavy sigh before deciding to sleep for five more minutes when I heard banging through the wall above my head.

"Come on, princess! Lyla, I can't be late again, Mrs. Shepard will kill me." Unfortunately, my younger brother Finn was a morning person.

"Okay, Finn. I'm up." I mumbled into the blankets I had bunched up around my neck. I kicked the blankets off of me and immediately regretted it. I couldn't believe how cold it was for early October! I made my way down the hall to the bathroom to brush my teeth and scrub the makeup from under my eyes that I had forgotten to remove the night before.

I heard Finn run down the hall and knock on the bathroom door before hurrying down the stairs. Even though Finn is younger than me by about a year, it always felt like he was the one who had to protect me and look after me. I smiled to myself thinking about how mature he was compared to some sixteen year old boys.

I splashed some cold water on my face in an effort to wake up a little bit before walking back to my room. I looked at the alarm clock sitting on my nightstand and felt a pinch of panic. Oh, crap! It was already 7:00 and first period started at 7:30. I rushed to pull on some black skinny jeans, an old tshirt, and a soft, over sized cardigan. I quickly brushed through my long, wavy hair that looked almost black in the dim morning light and used a black ribbon to tie back the front half.

I grabbed my phone from its charger, the book sitting on my nightstand, and my backpack before running out the door and down the stairs to the kitchen. Finn was already sitting on a stool at the raised counter wearing a denim jacket and his backpack.

"Finally! Seriously, Lyla, could you be any slower?"

"Probably, if I tried really hard." I rolled my eyes at him and he couldn't hide the small smile on his face. I slipped on my black Vans and grabbed a banana from the basket on the counter. Jokingly, I looked at Finn and said, "C'mon, what are you waiting for?"

"Alright, let's go. Can I drive?"

I tossed him my keys and we walked out the front door to my little blue Saturn.
