Chapter Four
I spent the rest of the night wondering whether or not I would actually show up to this audition. But I had promised Finn so after I finished my homework, I grabbed my overflowing music book and headed downstairs to the piano..
The packet Finn had given me said to pick any song that you were comfortable with and that suited your voice. I didn't think I was going to find anything that would make me feel comfortable in this situation so I just started looking through all of my music.
I played through a few different songs but none of them felt right. I was about to give up when I heard someone coming down the stairs. I expected to see Finn but instead it was my mother making her way towards me.
"Honey, what's wrong? You've been angry playing for half an hour now."
I tried to suppress my laughter but I couldn't hold it in and I let out a small giggle. "What do you mean angry playing?"
"Lyla, I've been your mother for almost eighteen years now and you've been musical pretty much the whole time. I can tell the difference between when you're playing because you love it or when you're upset about something."
"I... it's just, ugh. Finn signed me up to audition for the school musical without telling me and I don't think I can do it." I must have looked really miserable because my mom pulled me up from the bench and into a huge hug before sitting down next to me.
"Of course you can do it, Lyla. You have one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. And no, I'm not just saying that because I'm your mother and I have to." She gave me a soft smile that I had always looked for to comfort me.
"Your brother should have checked with you first but I think you'll thank him later. Just do your best and see what happens."
"Thanks, Mom," she smiled again and moved my hair off of my shoulder before heading back up the stairs.
She was halfway up when she stopped and turned to face me again. "Lyla, there is another book in the bench. You might find what you're looking for."

The next morning I didn't need Finn or my alarm clock to wake me up. I wasn't even sure that I had actually fallen asleep because I was so nervous about the audition.
I wanted to put a little more effort into how I looked so I had picked out an outfit the night before. I pulled on a dark red, long sleeved skater dress and black tights before remembering that I didn't really have any nice shoes. Oh well, I thought with a small shrug of my shoulders. I slipped on my favorite black Vans and headed into the bathroom.
I added a few loose curls to my long, dark hair and pinned the front pieces back. I quickly put on some thick black eyeliner, mascara, and a little red lipstick to match my dress.
I ran down the stairs and grabbed my denim jacket from the closet before heading into the kitchen.
"Wow, Lyla, you look great!" Finn said when he looked up from his bowl of cereal. "No wonder Louis was following you." I knew he couldn't just give me a compliment without teasing me too.
"Oh, come on, Finn. We both know he wasn't following me," I felt my cheeks get warmer thinking about it.
Finn clearly saw me blushing and decided just to drop the subject instead of embarrassing me any further. "Let's go! You can't be late on such a big day," he winked and grabbed my keys. Sometimes I really didn't know where all of his confidence came from when I had none.
~~~
The day and all of my classes went by in a blur and too soon it was almost my scheduled audition time. Finn had gotten a ride home with his friend Niall so I didn't even have him to keep me calm.
