Chapter Three

The rest of my day went by just as slowly as the morning, the only difference was I was worrying about why Louis was watching me practice. In a way, I had always been really protective of my music and I was terrified to let anyone hear it. Even Finn who was basically my favorite person on the planet hadn't heard me sing until I was fifteen and even then it wasn't my choice. He had gotten home early from baseball practice and I didn't notice anyone else in the house until he was standing right behind me at the piano.

When the final bell rang I walked out the front doors of the school, tugging my sweater down over my hands in an attempt to keep them warm. When I finally got to my car Finn was already sitting on the hood.

"Hey, Lyla!" he said, a little too excited to see me. "How was class?"

"It was fine," I said suspiciously, his smile only grew wider. "What's going on, Finn?"

"Well, I have kind of a surprise for you. After lunch, I saw Louis in the hallway so I stopped him to ask why he was wa-"

"Finn!" I practically yelled, interrupting him. "What are you trying to do?"

"Lyla, please just hear me out." He looked a little upset so I decided just to shut up. "Anyways, he said that auditions for the school musical are tomorrow and he heard you playing so he wanted to see who was using their lunch period to practice. That's all."

So he wasn't looking for me specifically? I had spent the last few hours in a state of major anxiety for no reason.

"Okay, Finn. Thanks for clearing that up for me," I said sarcastically. "Can we go home now?"

I unlocked the doors and sat in the driver's side, throwing my backpack in the back seat. Finn slowly climbed off of the front of the car and sat down in the seat next to me.

When we were a few blocks away from home, Finn pulled a thick packet out of his backpack.

"Hey, do you remember my friend Harry? Tall, skinny, curly hair?" It sounded familiar but I couldn't remember his face or think of why Finn would be telling me about him. I nodded my head.

"Well, he's really involved in the music program and everything and he's auditioning for the musical tomorrow too." I didn't like where this was going.

"What's the point of telling me all of this?"

"Um, I... I kinda signed you up to audition too." He leaned as far away from me as my tiny car would allow like he was worried I was going to hit him and I might have if he hadn't started talking again. "Look, Lyla, I know you're shy and don't like singing in front of people and everything but you're so good. I don't understand why you won't let anyone see how talented you are."

"Finn, it's not that I don't want to, I actually can't do it. You are- well, you were- the only person who's ever heard me play.

"Please? I know how amazing you are and I also know that everyone else will think so too."

"I really can't."

"Lyla, just promise me you'll try. If you choke then we'll know it's not for you. Okay?"

I hesitated to say anything as I turned right down our street. I pulled into our driveway and turned off the engine. I looked over at Finn and he was watching me with wide, hopeful eyes. He looked like he was about seven years old again.

"I am so going to regret this but... Okay."
