Chapter Two

By some miracle of lucky timing with stoplights and an open parking spot, Finn and I walked through the door with five minutes to spare before the bell. I told Finn I would see him later before walking down the hall, around the corner, and up the stairs to my locker. I grabbed my notebooks for Health and Creative Writing and quickly spun around to head to the Foods room.

I felt my shoulder collide with his chest and heard a sharp exhale before I saw the victim of my clumsiness.

"Oh my God, I am so sorry! Are you okay?" I looked up with wide, concerned eyes and I was met by soft, laughing eyes. My heart sunk when I realized who the guy was. I took in the sharp facial features surrounding his icy blue eyes and his soft brown hair sticking out in every direction on his head.

Louis Tomlinson.

I never believed that the cliche high school "it boy" existed in real life until Louis Tomlinson moved here from England freshman year. He was taller than me but only by a few inches and he looked down at me like he was trying to tell me some secret. I realized I was staring and still standing a little too close to him so I quickly took a step back.

"It's alright, love. I really should pay attention to where I'm going." I could feel my face turn bright pink so I gave him a small smile, turned, and hurried down the hall to my classroom. "I guess I'll see you around then," I heard him yell to me as I was just about to pull the door open. I couldn't bring myself to turn back around and look at the beautiful blue-eyed boy.

My morning classes went by painfully slowly and there was nothing interesting enough to keep me from thinking about my awkward encounter this morning. I heard the bell ring and let out a sigh of relief. It was finally 5th period and time for lunch.

Usually I went to the library for lunch or sometimes Finn felt brave enough to leave campus with me even though juniors aren't supposed to leave. But today I just wanted to go to a practice room. I needed to distract myself and the only way I could think of was to sit down at a piano.

Luckily, there were no private lessons that hour so most of the rooms were open. I picked the second door on the right, turned on the light switch, and sat down on the bench. I reached in my bag and pulled out my book of sheet music. I rifled through it for a little while before deciding on "On My Own" from Les Miserables. I had just learned to play it and the bridge was still a little rough so I started from the beginning and sang through the first part of the song.

After a couple times running through it I heard a knock on the door and spun around so fast that my long hair hit my music and sent it flying off of the piano. Finn pushed open the door and knelt down to collect the pages of music.

"Wow, someone's a little jumpy. What's going on, Lyla?"

"Nothing, really. Just a strange morning."

"Hey, do you know Louis Tomlinson?"

"Oh, God. Did you hear?"

Finn looked confused. "Hear what?" he asked. "He was just standing in the hall when I came in. Wait, what happened?"

"Well, I practically ran him over this morning. It was awful, Finn. I made a total idiot of myself!"

"You clearly made an impression on him. I don't think Louis Tomlinson spends his lunch period listening to just anyone play the same song over and over again."

I looked at my brother in complete disbelief. What would Louis Tomlinson want with me? Finn's bright green eyes that I knew were the exact same shade as mine were wide with amusement.

"Alright, fine. We won't talk about it," he said trying to hide his smile and failing. "We only have a few minutes left. Will you play the song for me? Louis got to hear it."
