It was the big party for some girl's birthday. I didn't care but was invited. That's why Tami called me on the phone to nag me to go because everyone else was going and that I shouldn't miss this huge event. Reluctantly, I went. I was more of the wallflower girl at parties. Didn't like to dance, didn't like to stand out. Not a big deal right?
But at least I dressed appropriately. I wore a sort of pinstripe black and white cocktail dress. My hair was adorned with a large clip with stripes and was fashioned into some nice curls. My feet were buckled with black dolly pumps, the ones that Tami got me for my birthday. I was pretty much monochrome.
No one seemed to notice. Most of the guys and girls partied like there was no tomorrow. Some got drunk and headed upstairs and did those dirty things that I shouldn't be talking about. Me? I dashed towards the desserts and filled my tummy with sweets. I didn't want to touch the punch. It might've been spiked with alcohol for all I cared.
I took a bite of my fruit tart. Then gobbled it all up. I was getting worried. I hadn't seen Tami at all. I wanted to show her my outfit that matched the shoes she gave me. So I wandered around, tart in hand.
I trampled through the dance floor. Once I reached the middle, I cursed to myself forgetting that I wasn't tall enough to see anybody. Changing my mind of meeting her on the dance floor, I trailed out towards the restroom. I clumsily bumped into some guy and almost fell. Until the guy's hand caught my arm, pulling me towards him.
"I'm sorry," I said to the ground below.
"It's all right. How 'bout you? Are you ok?"
I shook my head no then looked up. "Alex?"
He looked different. He was in an nice attire, a pinstripe suit. It seem to match his image of rich and famous.
"Um hi? But do I know you?" I was shocked. Did I look that different.
"It's me, Maddie. Can't you recognize me?"
"Maddie?" He looked surprised.
"Wow! You look, um, different." I laughed.
"Thanks, I guess. But the same goes to you." I looked around.
"Hey, Lexxie. Have you seen Tami around?"
"How many times have I told you not to call me 'Lexxie'. And no, I haven't seen her? Looking for her?"
"Yeah. I just wanted to tell her something."
"Hmm. Want me to help look for her? It's kind of hard to find people around here."
"Sure. As most people say that four eyes are better than two."
"So people with glasses are superb, huh?" He said mockingly.
"Yeah. They are. Holler when you find her." We parted ways.
A search for the girl that didn't even care. Once we met and found her location, I thanked Alex for his generosity and left. I strutted toward the corridor into the other room. The décor wall were plastered with wallflower hinged photographs. It was up-lifting one moment then melancholy the next.
Before heading into the room, something caught my eye. Upstairs was Tommy. Dressed up and polished. He had a grin on his face. Or maybe a smug look. I wasn't too sure. I was about to call his name. Maybe to ask him about Tami and such and such. But my mouth gaped wide open. Another girl was with him. She snuggled next to him and rubbed up against him. He kissed her and opened an unknown room and grabbed her inside with him.
The next thing I knew I was raging. I was in a fit. I hurriedly found Tami. She lounged with a bunch of her friends, cheerleaders, and other people whom I didn't know of. She look so nonchalant. So free. So different.
