St. Stephen's University

Tae Hyung POV

"Where?" I gasped, trying to catch my breath.

I had two minutes left before my interview begun yet I couldn't find the room.

Lost, I stopped whoever I could to ask for directions in the confusing corridors of St. Stephen's University.

Most students ignored me. Some sniggered. I wondered why.

Well, now I know; my accent.

Back in 2013, my English had a strong Daegu accent. I don't want to talk like how I did back then. It's embarrasing.

If I start speaking the way I did those days, you'll get a headache. So I'm going to say everything in English.

If you are going to imagine my talking style, think of Korean with Daegu slang, with the worst possible English thrown in.

Yikes, am I right?

"Where you from, man?" A boy with many ear piercings asked me.

"Me, Kim Tae Hyung from Daegu."

His friends begun to laugh.

Over time, I learnt that people often ask what they call 'rhetorical' questions; something they ask just to make a point, not expecting an answer.

Here, the point was to prove that I was an outsider amongst them.

"What are you interviewing for? Cleaner?" The boy with those ear piercings remarked and begun laughing.

I didn't know enough English back then to be offended. Plus, I had no time.

"Do you know where it is?" I ask instead, looking at his group of friends. They seemed to be them rich English types. There were 5 of them.

Just my luck I had to ask these English types.

Another boy, short and kind of plump, seemed to take pity on me.

"Take a left at the corner of the main white building, then you'll see a sign pointing to the Commitee Room. And hi, I'm Lim Seo Han." He replied to me in Korean.

"Thank you," I said in English. It was one of those phrases I knew pretty well before hand.

"Can you read the sign? It's in English." The ear-piercings boy mocked me.

Before I could respond, his friends told him to leave me alone.

Bless Seo Han.

I followed Seo Han's instructions and ran to the corner of the white building. I reached and saw the sign.

I ran some more and came upon a huge brown door, the words "Commitee Room" were written outside.
