Basketball Court, St. Stephen's University

Tae Hyung POV

If she weren't so tall, I wouldn't have noticed her.

It's funny how her height has shaped my life.

If she had been four inches shorter, my eyes may never have met hers and everything would have been different.

If I had not been bored and arrived at the basketball court an hour earlier, it would have been different.

If someone had not missed a pass and the ball had not flown out of the court, hitting my head in the process, I would have had a different life.

Tiny bumps in time shape our life, even though we spend hours, days, or even months trying to make long-term plans. I had not made any plan to meet the love of my life on a basketball court; I just went there to kill time, knowing I had nowhere else to go.

A small crowd of students, mainly male, had gathered around the basketball court of St. Stephen's.

Girls' sports trials always garnered an audience– there was no better excuse to check them out.

Everyone made comments and spoke in English, while I stayed quiet.

I straightened my back and stared at the court with a sense of purpose, mainly to come across like I belonged there.

As ten girls came out on court, the crowd cheered. Five girls were in the existing university team and the other five had applied for admission through the sports quota.

Almost instantaneously, Coach Yoo came to the centre of the court, ball in hand and whistle in mouth. As he sounded the whistle, the girls sprang into action.

Five feet, nine inches is really tall for a Korean girl; it is tall even for a girl in a basketball team.

Her long slender neck, arms and legs held every guy's attention. She was part of the sports-quota applicants' team.

She wore black sports shorts and a sleeveless black tank top with the letter "J" printed on the back in yellow. She also wore expensive ankle-length Nike sneakers, the kind I had seen NBA Stars wear on TV. Her diamond earrings twinkled in the sun.

She collected the ball within seconds and dribbled it with her right hand– which was when I notice how beautifully slender her fingers were.

"10 points for looks, coach!" A senior male student yelled out as J passed the ball.

The crowd tittered.

Okay, well, the men did.

The wisecrack distracted J for a moment, but she resumed her game soon after. It was as if she was used to such comments.
