Liam decided that in order to protect their loved ones AND themselves, they went into hiding. They lied to the public and theirs fan, telling them that the rumors and lies were too much and that they weren't going to be One Direction anymore. They knew it would crush their fans, but they had to do it.
Unfortunately, the boys were not able to attend Mackenzie's funeral, but Niall talked to her everyday. The boys kept their promise and helped Niall through his loss. Liam confessed and told the boys about his use of liquor and drugs after Danielle died. They were shocked that he kept his secret from them, but stayed by his side.
