The doctor strode across the sterile floor, his shined shoes creating clicking sounds with each step. Silence engulfed the room, all pairs of eyes watching the once fine and respectable man strutting in an arrogant manner. My blood boiled with anger and betrayal. Dr Lancur; not imprisoned behind bars alongside the doctors and Class D personnel but free and by the looks of it, in league with The Chaos Insurgency. I sought out Larry who had stopped his frantic attempt at opening the cell doors and was now watching Dr Lancur with loathing but not surprise. The doctor spotted Bruce's body, tsked and shook his head.
"It has come to my realisation that I missed quite the battle," Dr Lancur observed, pursing his lips. "I do hope our soldiers fought gallantly. It brings me great pain and dismay to see they have been murdered callously."
"Your soldiers?!" I exclaimed, eyebrows shooting up in disbelief. "You mean........they......"
"Work for me?" Dr Lancur suggested. "Why, of course William. How else do you suppose they infiltrated the headquarters?"
I stepped away from a man I once trusted. Looking towards his employees, their faces mirrored each other; a mixture of disbelief and pain. The Class D personnel looked at the doctor with glowering eyes, their hatred only infusing.
"Is Dr Tan an accomplice?" I found my voice once more.
"Yes," Dr Tan answered the question. "From the very beginning."
"And you both work for The Chaos Insurgency?" I tried to understand.
"Work for?" Dr Lancur asked, incredulously before throwing back his head in laughter.
His fit of amusement lasted a good half minute as I waited impatiently for an answer. Larry rolled his eyes in a sign of obvious annoyance, wanting nothing more than to tear the man to pieces.
"William, you're so naïve!" Dr Lancur brushed away a tear of laughter. "Your ignorance has blinded you. I am The Chaos Insurgency!"
His words nearly sent me off my feet as I processed the meaning of them. Dr Lancur was the head of The Chaos Insurgency. Puzzle pieces fused together, creating a clear picture. Lingering questions that had hung over my head met their answers. From the changes in protocol to the easing of security measures, Dr Lancur had pulled the strings like an expert puppeteer and we had been oblivious. The imprisoned doctors gasped in surprise, cries of protest slipped through the bars.
"You traitor!" a dark haired man shouted, clutching the bars.
"We trusted you!" a whimpering female voice sounded from within.
With closer inspection, I could discern the voice belonged to Dr Ash who was huddled in a corner. Her bun was slightly askew and her neat attire looked ruffled and dirty. It was likely she had tried to seek an exit only to be caught.
"I can't say I'm surprised," Larry spoke up after being quiet for so long.
The cries of the injustice of the situation died down as all eyes swivelled towards the SCP. Looking impassive, he faced Dr Lancur from above, hands gripping the railing of the stairs. Almost instantly, a corrosive stain spread across it. Dr Lancur cocked his head upward toward Larry, a half smile lingering on his lips.
"SCP 106," Dr Lancur acknowledged him. "You are not dead."
"Obviously," Larry answered.
He looked over to Dr Tan whose eyes widened in surprise and fear. His mouth opened and closed several times, trying to word his sentence.
"I........it was........." Dr Tan's voice failed him.
"A failure," Larry finished for him. "It was ineffective."
