Blood rushed to Kate’s cheeks and she quickly pulled away from Gerard.
“H-hi, I’m Kate…” she stumbled over her words, awkwardly chewing her bottom lip.
“I’m Mikey,” the boy in the doorway said, still looking confused. His eyes flashed to Gerard. “Have you guys been smoking weed?”
“Maybe,” Gerard giggled.
Mikey rolled his eyes, shoving his hands deep in the pockets of his black jeans. “Mum and dad would be pissed.”
“Well, mum and dad aren’t here, and you’re not going to tell them.” Gerard answered, grabbing the bag of remaining weed and shoving it back into his backpack.
Mikey folded his arms across his chest stubbornly. “Ok, I won’t tell them… if you let me have some.”
Gerard laughed obnoxiously, pushing his black fringe out of his face. “No fucking way! You’re only 15, Mikey.”
Kate examined Mikey, looking him up and down. He was tall enough to be their age, much taller than both her and Gerard. He had a sharp jaw and hard eyes and was glaring at Gerard spitefully. Despite these features, his glasses and straightened brown hair made him look innocent and sweet.
“So what!? I’ll be sixteen soon enough…”
While the two boys argued, Kate’s eyes grew heavy. The room had slowed down. How many hours had she spent at Gerard’s house? Surely, her father would be worried about her if he was home already.
“Whatever!” Mikey yelled, “I don’t need you anyway!”
He grabbed the door handle and slammed Gerard’s door closed. The posters covering the walls shuddered and Kate could hear Mikey’s footsteps stomping down the hallway.
“Sorry about my little brother,” Gerard said sheepishly, taking his place back on the bed beside her. “He’s only fifteen, and I don’t want him around this shit.”
“How old are you?” Kate enquired.
“I’m eighteen.”
“I’m only seventeen.”
Gerard shrugged. “You’ve still got two years on him. He’s just my kid brother… I don’t want him to start something he can’t stop.”
Kate nodded, clearly understanding Gerard’s point of view. They sat in silence for a moment; awkwardness settling in the air between them. A few minutes earlier, their lips had been centimetres apart. Kate had only known this boy for one afternoon; intoxication had gotten the best of her.
“Well, I better be getting home,” she said, standing.
Gerard laughed. “You still look stoned as fuck.”
“My dad will probably be with his girlfriend anyway. I’ll be fine,” she was assuring herself more than she was assuring Gerard.
He walked her to the front door.
“Well, I guess I’ll see you at school tomorrow,” Gerard grinned, leaning coolly against the door frame, “Unless I find you watching me from the bushes first.”
She rolled her eyes. “You wish.”
She felt his eyes on her as she walked down his driveway. Kate smiled to herself. She had just made her first friend.

“Hey dad! I’m home!” Kate shouted as she walked through her front door.
Thankfully, she was met with no response. Pushing her way through packed cardboard boxes, she made her way to her bedroom. Her walls were bare and so far, all she had was a desk and a bed. Most of her furniture was left in California, at her mum’s house, in her old bedroom. Sitting at her desk, she longed for her old bedroom and her old house. She missed her brother and her friends. Grabbing a pen, she began to write.
