« autumn »"where you going, sweetheart?"
we stop in our tracks, afraid of what to do. hayes and jack are silently telling us to keep going with vigorous hand motions but i feel frozen in my spot, unable to move. i gulp, "t-the bedroom," i try and throw him off, although they're all pretty close together so it's not like it would buy us any time anyhow.
he grabs ahold of my forearm, trying to pull me closer to him. hayes springs into action, pinning him to the nearest wall. "don't fucking touch her," he growls. hayes nods to us, telling us to go to the bathroom. we run into the restroom, closing and locking the door behind us.
i shakily pull my phone out of my pocket, dialling 911. em sets her hand on my shoulder, attempting to comfort me silently. "911, what's your emergency?" a woman's voice fills the speaker as i hold the cellphone up to my ear. i try and stay as quiet as possible, not wanting to give away the fact we're calling the cops.
"there's someone in my house, he-he has a knife and-and admitted to stalking me," i stammer. the operator on the other end hums understandingly, and i can hear some writing on a notepad along with the click of a pen.
"where are you, sweetie?" she asks in a sweet tone, trying to calm me down but it's no use. i'm scared beyond control.
"446 manchester road." i successfully get out without stuttering. she hums once again, this time clicking some keys on a keyboard.
"the police will be there soon, honey," i nod, even though she can't tell. "now, i'm gonna need you to stay on the line with me no matter what, okay?" she questions. at this point, tears are falling down both em's and my cheeks, scared for our lives.
"o-okay," i stutter, barely able to hold a whisper. i can hear a lot of banging around outside the door, until a giant bang is heard, hitting the door. i recognize hayes' groan, which makes my crying grow harder and em basically has to hold me back from leaving the room.
"i don't want your stupid girlfriend. i want autumn," i hear alex, making me begin to shake in my spot. at this point, i'm absolutely terrified. i rock back and forth, trying desperately not to make any noise.
"where are you?" the operator asks, whom i forgot was even on the phone.
"the room at the very end of the hallway," i breathe. i hear typing and then more smashing outside. i start sobbing, emma having to cover my mouth with her sleeve to muffle the cries.
i hear the front door barge open, along with the police telling alex that everything he says and does can— and will— be used against him in the court of law. a knock on the bathroom door startles me, "miss? it's okay, you can come out now," i unlock and open the door. we both stand up, the officer escorting us to the front porch where he sits us down.
"so what went down?" he asks, pulling a notepad out of his pocket.
"well, we were having an office marathon and autumn's boyfriend came knocking on our door and she opened it and he walked in and sat down and admitted to stalking her and hayes saw a knife in his waistband and told us to lock ourselves in the bathroom." em tells the story as i'm still not able to speak properly.
"okay, ms. gallivan, you can go. autumn, can i speak to you?" he asks, i nod. "so i'm guessing this was pretty traumatic, if you want any therapy of some kind, i have some great resources that are available and—" his speech is tuned out by me when i hear hayes yelling my name out. at which point, i can't focus on what he's saying and i keep diverting my eyes from his to the sound of hayes' calls. "hayes?" he asks, to which i nod. he motions to him with a smile, telling me that i can go and see him.
