Violet

Words could not describe the creature that my son had been turned into. Horror filled my eyes at I continued to stare at him. His thirst had recently been replenished by the three victims that fell before him.

He stood straight from his small crouched form. I did a double take as I absorbed his disheveled look. Asher had no reaction to his own son looking like a mess; in fact, nobody had anything to say.

His grown canines have been drawn down to fangs and his hisses vibrated in my mind. I carried so much shock and fear yet I didn't know what to do. He was my son, but the Shadows have turned him into something I could never even imagine.

"Zayden? Sweetie, it is us. How are you feeling?" Asher asked wearily while I could not even move my mouth to articulate any words. I remained silent by my husband's side. The only reply we received was a full growl that only a grown male werewolf could muster. I retreated a couple steps back in fear. This was definitely not my son. I could not even recognize this beast in front of my eyes.

Rendering slowly behind Zayden's shoulder was a figure I had very much forgotten about. The former queen of the vampire kingdom stood mighty with a sly smile on her face. I stuttered for words. The act of possessing a dead body had occurred in three bodies now and the Shadows weren't planning to stop there.

A line of dried blood ran from the corner of her mouth down to the bottom of her chin. Her fangs that accompanied that devious smile sent chills throughout my body. I gripped onto Asher's arm, but he flinched under my touch. He faced me for a split second and massive amounts of fear emitted from him. He had never once feared his son, or his mother. How was that possible?

The Shadows had enough power to turn the vampire prince and queen against their bloodline.

"Don't take another step back, Violet." A deep demonic voice vibrated from the queen's mouth. That was definitely not her voice and when her mouth opened to speak, it revealed the most pungent smell that a Shadow could muster. "Or shall I say, Queen Violet." She insisted. A rapid fire of clicks followed about ten times after then stopped, but the smell remained thick in the air.

"What do you want?" Asher spoke up. His stance and voice held bravery and courage, but deep down, I felt strong waves of anxiousness. My hands continued to grip onto his arm, but it stayed rigid. Nobody moved a muscle, not even Caleb.

Caleb was speechless. And so was everyone. The sight in front of them was a handful to take in. I then turned my head to face Adriana again, only this time, her hand rested on my son's shoulder. Something triggered inside of me and I grew protective suddenly on the threatening hand, but remained still since my son was just like her.

"Isn't it obvious? You fell in love with a trap. You've given her the bloodline and the future of vampires when you could've had a pure vampire heir to the kingdom." She hissed. Asher held no emotions nor did I.

After all these years of staying under the same roof with the queen, she had become caring and generous to my mother and I. She had even blessed me for providing such beautiful grandchildren. These were definitely not her words, they were possessed by someone else's. She had been tainted by a figure that loathed us.

But who could possibly have such a hate against me? It all came flooding back to me. It was also the environment that had stimulated such a memory that had been buried deep inside my mind for ages and was now peeling at the raw surface.

"How have you been, Anabelle?" Ash offered with a raised eyebrow. "How has life been treating you? I'm just assuming an answer, but it seems as if your life has been a living hellhole since you're still here. You've planted your roots deep into the past and you seem to be struggling to escape it. Is that the story? Or am I wrong?"

His sly expressions hinted that he wanted to trigger something within her. He wanted a fight. He played with fire, but right now, he took the fire from her and became it. He ignited a power inside that tunnel that nobody dared to challenge him and tell him to stop.

"Please do enlighten me about your journey to this position. How could a vampire princess possibly become a Shadow and lead an army of Shadows when they're nothing but a pile of dust? Look where you've ended up, Anabelle. You've just tumbled down a huge mountain that should've been left alone for years." He carried on. She stood speechless but her nails dug into my son's shoulder yet he didn't feel a thing.

I grew weary at where this was going. Nobody knew where Ash was getting at, but her high pitched screech caused me to flinch on the spot. Her eyes grew to a dangerous crimson color, but I stood my ground when she shoved Zayden behind her. She completely ignored his existence and didn't acknowledge when he tumbled backwards and landed on his behind. He remained there as if waiting for orders, like a dog.

I growled and heated to such a temperature that could blow off the top of my head. I was furious. I brushed past Asher and surged with energy that lighted my fists at the simple flicker of a flame.

"Don't. You. Dare. Mistreat. My. Son." I stated sternly. She scoffed at my remark and I imagined her rolling her eyes.

"Please, don't be so melodramatic." She then smirked with a snap of a finger. Shadows appeared immediately at her beck and call. They've all crowded behind the guards. We were taken by surprise but the flame that shined did not flicker one bit. I wasn't about to back down, not now, especially if we've come so close to Zayden.

A deep growl came from the back of my throat and I lashed out at her. My steering hot hands landed on both the queen's shoulders and scarred wherever I touched.

The annoying clicks screamed from her mouth when she opened it. I loosened my grip for a millisecond but regained strength by blocking the sound that could drive me crazy.

When I glanced around at my surroundings for the first time, everyone was battling with the substance, but what caught my eyes were the flaming hands that my husband held and he aided those guards who were struggling.

I smirked then placed my hands upon her neck then slowly applied pressure with an intention to destroy. Anabelle only wanted to take the throne for herself. She yearned to destroy her own family just for her selfish needs.

The red eyes held mine and the smile never left her face. The Shadow gasped for air in a human body form. Pathetic use of a life. I fed my mind with poison that was still not enough for the things that she has done to my son. My hands left burn marks that could never be healed, but can only weaken.

She panicked and gasped for breath but I watched her closely. She had something to say and she was never going to back down until she got it out of her mind.

"You should worry about tending to Jillian's injuries than to your own sorry broken heart."
