Ignicia's eyes were filled with fear, tears threatening her vision. She could feel her throat closing up and her heart racing. Smoke filled the room, and she could feel the warmth of the fire spreading through her body. Her house was about to go up in flames, and she knew she wouldn't be able to get out fast enough. Her brain had shut down and she was still half asleep.
But she also knew that she was too young to die; 8 years old wasn't her time to go. She could feel it, like something was telling her she was meant to live longer.
So she grabbed her favorite stuffed animal and a sweatshirt and ran out her bedroom door. As she looked around her house, she could see the tall, orange-yellow fiery flames spreading faster than she could ever run.
She had been so caught up in the moment that she hadn't realized how close she really was to the burning house, and that she needed to get out.
The flames were surrounding her. The furniture, the dining room table, everything consumed and dissolved by a monster beyond control. If only the firefighters could get here faster.
She could feel tears streaming down her face, and the heat getting to her. Ignicia's insides felt like they were being squished inward, and she shut her eyes right and held out her arms in reflex.
Ignicia waited for pain, for hurt, for a burning sensation, anything. But nothing came.
She slowly opened her eyes to see the flames had shaped a dome around her, and all the heat had disappeared. It was as if she was carefully placed into a fire, heat, and flame proof room. Despite Ignicia's surprise, she knew she needed to get out of her house. Clutching her stuffed bunny in her hand, Ignicia took two small steps toward the door, her protection bubble following her. She briskly grasped the doorknob and slipped outside to see her mom and sister waiting for her.
Ignicia gasped at a sudden burning sensation in her wrist, but then all she felt was cold.
When she looked down, she saw a flame surrounded by two circles. And below that small symbol, engraved into her skin was, in small writing- "ignition."
