                                                                           Prologue:

Daniel didn’t know when it started. Wait… yes he did. It started the day Hunter rejected him. The day Daniel fell so hard and far, that all he need was a friend to pick him up, but Hunter didn’t even acknowledge his existence. He hated him. Daniel Roberts hated Hunter Jackson with every fiber…every particle…every atom of his being, but It wasn’t always like that. In fact, they used to be friends. The best of friends.

                                That’s where our story begins.

Chapter One: Every Charcater Has a Backstory

Four years ago, you wouldn’t have expected two bright-eyed eighth graders to grow to hate each other.

It was the end of eight grade year, and summer was just around the corner. Daniel and Hunter sat impatiently in their horribly uncomfortable plastic desks. Their limbs had started to go numb from sitting idle for so long. Hunter reached his arms up for a stretch.

“Danny!” Hunter whispered, making Daniel turn toward him.

“What’s up, Hunter?” He whispered back, but the boys were not so great at that, so they might as well have spoken out loud.

“Alright boys, that’s enough. It’s silent reading, so stay silent! You can talk when the bell rings,” Ms. Greene scolded.  Hunter rolled his eyes. He ripped some paper out of his notebook. Daniel looked at him curiously. What was so important that he couldn’t wait twenty minutes? Hunter was furiously scribbling something down. He looked up at Ms. Greene to make sure she wasn’t looking, then not- so- slyly, handed Daniel the note. He looked down and tried to make out Hunter’s sloppy handwriting.

‘Yo, Danny, my mom is going out with dad tonight, and I don’t have my keys. Do you care if I go home with you today?’

Daniel shook his head at the stupid nickname. He let out a huff and scribbles a reply.

‘Why would I care? We practically live with each other, and my mom loves you. Luckily my dad is out, so there wont be any immediate yelling. We can go to Rosie’s after we drop off our bags.’

Daniel handed the note to Hunter, who grinned as he read it. Just as he was about to right something else down, the bell let out the screeching sound of freedom.

“Hunter, were you going to write something else down?” Daniel asked, packing up his stuff as he went. His friend seemed unusually nervous today.

“Nah, I was just writing down a ‘thanks’,” that was a lie, and Daniel knew it, but decided that it wasn’t worth a fight. “Did you turn in your slip for tomorrow? “

  “Just about to”, Daniel said.

“Dude, you're cutting it a bit close though, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, mom has been busy, and dad is to big of a prick to be of any use”, Daniel said, knowing that his friend would know to drop the subject.

“I still cant believe that your parents are getting a divorce. Its crazy.” Daniel shook his head, of course Hunter wouldn’t get the hint.

“I cant believe that the school signed off on going to the zoo”, Daniel said, trying to divert the conversation. He really didn't want to talk about this. Hunter got the hint.

                                                   ...............................................................

Daniel hated field trips, or at least this one. It wasn't where he was at though, it was who he was grouped with. Hunter and a few of his friends had gotten on the highschool football team, and now they thought they were unstoppable. The only one Daniel could stand, was Hunter, and sometimes even he became unbearable. It made it worse that Hunters friends didnt like Daniel, and they went out of their way to make him aware of it.

"Hey check this out", one of them said. After that, he only had a few seconds before he felt ice cream collide with his shirt.

"Seriously? Are you four?" Daniel asked. For all he knew, they had the intellect of one.

"Awe, is Danny gonna cry about it?" They teased, it was only then that he saw Hunter with ice cream on his hand. That hurt.

"No, I'm not, but I'm too keen on being cold," he said before tryig to walk away, but he was stopped by a hand on his shoulder.

"You don't walk away from us loser," Hunter sneered.

'What is up with him?'  Daniel thought. Hunter has been rude before, but never cruel. It baffled him that his friend could be this way.

"I walk away when I feel like," He countered. That was when Hunter hit him, hard, in the stomach. His friends started laughing.

"Drop dead loser", Hunter said. Daniel could physically feel the pain of his heart breaking.

"You first asshole", he said. "But before you do, please tell me one thing, are you just doing this to over compensate for the fact that your mom just doesn't care? Or the fact that your dad would rather fuck his secretary, than play football with you?" Hunter's eyes grew wide. Daniel has never fought back before, but he sure as hell wasn't done. "You know, I actually feel sorry for you, Hunter. Do you know why? Well, let me tell you. Its because you're so blind to things that matter. You don't see what's in front of you. I'm done with you, so you can just add me to the mountain of people who've given up over the years." Daniel walked away. He ignored all the feelings of guilt that tried to overwhelm him. One thing that kept going through his mind as he made his way towards the buses, 'Man, freshman year is going to suck.'
