Chapter Two: So Long High School, Hello Roommate

Four years later, the senior class of Caster’s high were getting ready to graduate. Everyone was ready to ditch their parents for a never ending semester of parties, oops, I meant college. Daniel was also excited to leave, but not for the parties. He just wanted to get away from his father.

After the divorce, Daniel’s parents got a custody hearing, which his father won. It wouldn’t have been so bad, if his mother had stayed in the state, but she didn’t, and things progressively got worse than his father’s constant yelling. Mr. Roberts was furious that his wife had left him, and took it out on his son. Punching, striking, and thrashing at him, until Daniel lay unconscious and bleeding on the floor. His mom didn’t know, and Daniel wanted to keep it that way. It would only get worse if she was involved. He would just anxiously await a break from his dad every other holiday. But now, after four years of hell, he could go to a safe place. School was a sanctuary, and now he never had to see his dad again.

Daniel got into Peterson University on a full ride art scholarship, and he’d be rooming with a guy that his mother recommended. Daniel didn’t even ask his name, he just said yes. He’ll meet him later today anyway, when he moves in. He wanted a few weeks to get settled into his new home.

‘God,’ he thought, ‘this is the last day of high school, and then I’m off to the university.’ Just the simple thought of leaving made him happy. He unconsciously did a little skip.

“Umm, Daniel,” His friend Joe said, giving him a strange look, “What’s with the skip?” Daniel blinked, until he realized what he did, and immediately blushed.

“Oh, uh, sorry. I, umm, am just a little excited to leave this place,” Daniel said, trying not to sound too happy. He was already a big enough dork.

“Awe, you’re happy to leave me? I thought you love me, Danny,” A feminine voice called. Daniel cringed and his smile fell. What the hell was she doing here?

“Becca, I told you not to call me Danny,” Daniel said, irritation seeping through his, usually, calm tone. Only two people have ever been allowed to call him Danny, and one of them lost that, along with his friendship.

“Sorry baby, but youre so dang adorable, it’s hard to resist myself!” She nearly shouted in his ear.

“Well stop. Its really fucking annoying.” This comment came from Joe, shocking both of them.

“Jesus bro, I was just playing around. I didn’t mean to harsh your bromance,” Becca said.

‘With a flip of her magenta hair, the green eyed devil had stormed off in fit of rage’ Daniel thought with a giggle.

“My sister is a piece of work, isn’t she? No wonder you never dated her,” Joe said with a knowing look. Daniel nodded.

“Yeah, Joe, that’s why I ignored her passes at me”, Daniel said, smirking along with him. Joe was the one and only person he told about his dating “preferences”. He could trust Joe, Joe was his best friend, but he wouldn’t date him. They were like brothers, and nothing more.

“Anyway bro, I’ve got to head to class. Text me later, okay?” Joe said, taking one last look at his friend.

“Yeah, im heading out early, I only came to school to say goodbye. See you…” Daniel didn’t finish his sentence, he just trailed off.

“Yeah, see you” Joe said. His short orange hair looked vibrant against his pale skin. He turned back to Daniel and waved, his green eyes looked sad at the loss of his best friend.

“Dude, don’t look so sad. I’m not dying, I’m going to a school that’s only 5 hours away,” Daniel said, trying to cheer him up.

“Yeah whatever, bye” This time, he walked into the school building. Daniel walked to his beat up, old, pick-up truck, and got in. He sighed, and looked at all of his luggage for the next four years. He wasn’t coming back to this place. When he leaves, it’s for good. Thank god his mom already god him a place to stay. It’s a good thing she’s a realtor. Let’s just hope that his roommate is as great as she makes him out to be.

“Well, I guess I’ve gotta risk is,” he breathed. What’s life without a little chance thrown into the mix? He sighed once more, shifted the gear into reverse, and backed out his old school once and for all.
