Chapter 3: What a Pleasant Surprise

“No,” Daniel breathed. ‘This cannot be happening,’ he thought.

“Well this is unfortunate,” Hunter deadpanned. ‘What the fuck? Is this seriously not bothering him?’

“why the fuck are we roomates?” Daniel asked, dismissing Hunter’s earlier statement.

“Whoa there, watch your mouth. Can’t we discuss this like civilized human beings?” Hunter asked, but Daniel only glared at him. “You know what? We both said things when we were kids. It wasn’t just me Dann—”

“Don’t you dare call me Danny, and don’t spout some bullshit about how we should ‘forgive and forget’ like some hippy bullshitters. I don’t like you for more reasons than ‘my feelings hurt’, so just shut up,” Danny was fuming. Okay, maybe he was over reacting, but he felt that it was deserved. Hunter gave him a strange look.

“You know what? If you want to keep this hostility in the air for the next couple of years, be my guest. Obviously you don’t want to let go of your grudge,” Daniel was about to interrupt him again, but was silenced with a look, “but let at least try to be civil towards each other. It’s just until the lease ends, okay? Please?” Daniel let out a frustrated sigh. Hunter had a point, but he didn’t have to like it.

“Fine, we’ll be civil to each other.” Daniel turned towards the short hallway, and the turned back. “Ummm… which room is mine?” Hunter tried to hide the smirk forming on his face, which just pissed Daniel off.

“It’s the one on the left.” Daniel turned back to the hallway, and mad his way to his room. When he opened the door, his eyes were assaulted with shades of white. He couldn’t stand white walls, but add white furniture into the mix, and it looked like a nursery home. The only thing that wasn’t white in the room, was the black bedframe. Daniel sighed. He had some work to do.

After three hours of moving in, Daniel’s four white walls where covered in paintings, pictures, and posters. His black bedframe now had a mattress with black sheets and a red comforter. His black computer was sitting on his white desk on the farthest corner of the room. The dresser and closet were now full of his clothes. When Daniel was satisfied with how his room looked, he grabbed his sketchbook, and headed out to the living room. The first thing he saw was a flat screen. He must have missed it during his conversation with Hunter. Speaking of the devil, Hunter was laying down on the threadbare couch, cuddling up to a disgustingly floral pillow. Daniel studied his long ago best friend. He changed a lot through the years. Hunter’s once lemon colored hair, had darkened into a darker shade of blonde. His jaw had squared out a little more, making him seem… well… handsome. Daniel shook his head, and grabbed one of the other pillows on the couch. He sat on the worn-out hardwood floor, not wanting to wake up his roommate. He put the pillow on his lap, and used it as a propboard for his sketchbook, and flipped to the next blank page. Once the pencil hit the page, there was no stoping the natural flow of artistic talent. Each stroke had some sort of meaning or emotion behind it. Daniel ended up drawing two daisies surrounded by dead roses.

“Pushing daisies?” asked a voice that made him jump.

“Jesus fucking Christ, Hunter”, Daniel gasped

“Ha, sorry. But seriously, pushing daisies?” Hunter persisted.

“I don’t have the need to explain my art to you. Interpret it as you may, but I will not justify it with a response.” Daniel nearly smacked himself at how idiotic and hipster-ish he sounded.

“Okay, fine. You’re the artist here, not me. I’ll respect that, but I do look forward to the reasoning when you slip up and tell me”, Hunter said with a smirk. Daniel rolled his eyes, he was not going to slip. Daniel closed his sketchbook and put his pencil behind his ear.
