Chapter 4: Thunderstorms and Pizza
Hunter and Daniel were relaxing on their couch, some dumb action movie was playing on the T.V. They weren’t watching it though, they were talking through it the whole time. The attempted mugging incident happened only a few hours ago and as promised, Hunter had the gooey cheese pizza waiting for them when they got home.
“So Daniel… how the hell did you learn those moves?” Hunter asked around a mouthful of pizza. Daniel had been waiting for this question all night. He was surprised it took him this long to ask.
“I took a couple years of boxing. I barely even used the basics; it wasn’t even that impressive,” Daniel said, shrugging off the awed look that Hunter was giving him.
“Of course they were impressive! I never would have expected that,” he said. He looked over and saw the face Daniel was making. “Sorry to make you uncomfortable. It’s just the fact that you were never the ‘athletic type’ in middle school, and in high school, well you just tried your hardest to disappear.” Daniel glanced over towards Hunter. He had said “tried to” rather than “he had”, did that mean that Hunter had noticed him? Daniel quickly dismissed those thoughts. He couldn’t dwell on the past; it was unhealthy.
“Yeah, well people change,” he said. We was about to change the subject, when he heard a distant roll of thunder from outside. Daniel blanched and his muscles tensed up. He tried to focus on the crappy action movie. He hoped that Hunter wouldn’t notice him. He just kept staring at the television, and tried to ignore the approaching storm.
The thunder got closer, and therefore harder to ignore. Daniel thought that he was at least kind of okay, until a particularly loud clap made him yelp. “Um, Daniel?” Hunter asked hesitantly. Daniel winced at the worried tone in Hunter’s voice. As if he didn’t feel pathetic enough. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah I’m fi–” he was interrupted by a clap of thunder. Daniel gripped one of the ugly pillows to his chest. The thunder was getting louder, and Daniel was getting more fearful.
“Obviously you’re not,” he took a pause to look at Daniel, “Are you still terrified of thunder?” He asked, already knowing the answer. Thunder roared outside, and Daniel nearly jumped into Hunter’s lap. He was shaking uncontrollably, and Hunter didn’t know what to do, so he grabbed Daniel’s hand.
With each clap of thunder, Daniel’s shaking got worse. Hunter pulled him so that they were laying down together, Hunter in back and Daniel in front. Daniel forgot about the storm. All he could feel were the warm arms wrapped around his waist, and the electrifyingly hot breath on the back of his next. This had never happened before, and he didn’t know how to react. Another wallop of thunder came, and Daniel didn’t hesitate to twist around and bury his face in Hunter’s shirt. What was wrong with him? He never showed weakness in front of people. At least with anyone else. He felt safe with Hunter. Pretty soon, he felt himself being drawn off into a light sleep.
A little while later, Hunter went to get up, but felt two hands tighten their grip on his shirt. “Don’t leave,” Daniel muttered. He didn’t want the warmth of the other boy to leave. He was safe. No one was going to rush in and hit him. He peeled his head off of Hunter’s chest. “Please don’t go,” he begged. Hunter looked down at him and smiled a warm, heartfelt smile.
“I just have to use the bathroom, I’ll be right back,” he said. Once Hunter left the couch, Daniel realized how cold it was in the house. He got up to go grab a blanket, and bumped into Hunter in the hallway. Daniel smiled at him and went to go around, but Hunter grabbed him by the elbow and spun him around. “Are you alright?” Hunter asked, concerned about Daniels fear, it had gotten worse over the years.
“Uh, yeah. I’m aright. Thanks.” He looked in Hunter’s coffee colored eyes, and then his lips. It was then that they realized how close they actually were in the small hallway. Hunter looked at Daniel’s blue orbs, and then down to his mouth. It seemed as though time moved slower. The 6’1 football player, and the 5’10 boxing art major slowly moved closer together. 6 inches. Now 5. Then 4. 3. 2. And Daniel stopped. He knew that is was a bad idea. He didn’t want to stop, but he had to do the right thing. This couldn’t happen. What happened on the couch was bad enough, but add a kiss into the equation? Uh-oh. He knew that, so he spoke in a soft and, unfortunately, husky voice. “We should go to bed… in our own rooms.” Hunter, for a brief moment, looked disappointed. “Goodnight Hunter,” Daniel said, before retreating into his room. One thought never left him the whole night; did he have to ruin everything?
(AN): Oh, what’s this? Another update so soon?
To tell you the truth, I felt bad that it took so long for the last update. I was in a hotel for the past couple of days due to frozen roads and canceled school, and the Wi-Fi was terrible so I couldn’t upload it on the computer, but I did it! And now I have another chapter already typed up and ready to goJ
But please, can you do me a favor? I want to hear your opinions on what’s going to happen between Hunter and Daniel. How are they going to act after that moment on the couch, or the awkward almost kiss? Let me hear your opinion on this!
Also, before I forget; this chapter wouldn’t have been written if not for my best friend’s advice and my other oh-so-loyal bestie. Thanks Allison and Michelle <3 -S
