Melanie POV

I hate getting up early. It's 7:30AM now. I have slept six hours. But you know what, I'm not complaining. I had the best day yesterday and nothing can ruin my mood today. Not even work. I quickly take a shower and put on my black shirt and black skinny jeans. These working clothes are so simple. But dad wants it to be simple. He doesn't want that our family bussiness changes into a place where only rich people feel welcome. He wants everyone to feel the love and warmth of our restaurant. The only thing I can do is respect his decision. I put on some mascara and put my hair together with a hair band. I walk down the stairs quietly to not wake Eric and dad. Even though dad sleeps downstairs, he's still able to wake up due to the cracking stairs. I make breakfast for myself, dad and Eric. Eric has to work himself but he has to start an hour later than me today. I put the bread on the table together with the jam and chocolate pasta. I take a slice of bread and put a slice of cheese on it. I quickly eat my breakfast because I have to start at 8:30AM and it's a fifteen minutes walk so I have to hurry. Suddenly, the door opens and dad comes into the kitchen. "Goodmorning, love. How are you?" he asks. "I'm great, just a little bit tired." He laughs and looks up to me. "How was it yesterday?" I give him a cup of coffee and take one myself. I tell him everything about the restaurant, the French meals, the London Eye and of course about him asking me to be his girlfriend. "You should see that smile on your face," my dad laughs. "But it sounds like you've had a wonderful evening. And Lucas seems a good man for you. I hope you're going to be happy together." I take his hand and rubb my thumb over his hand. "Thanks dad. It means a lot to me that you're happy with it too." He smiles and drinks a bit of his coffee, even though it's really hard for him to lift the cup. "I have to leave. Eric is awake in an hour in case you need him." I kiss his cheek and put on my shoes and my jacket. I close the door behind me and start my walk to the restaurant. It will be weird. Within a month, Eric and I will be the bosses and the owners of the restaurant and not my dad. Not that there's a huge difference. Eric and I already do everything in the restaurant because dad can't focus on the paperwork anymore. After I finished high school, I immediately started to work in the restaurant because dad couldn't find employees. No one wants to work in a restaurant because you have to work evening shifts. The youngsters now want to go out every single night, so working evening shifts isn't an option then. So I decided to work there and study later. But now it seems that I will own a restaurant in a few weeks so going to college won't be an option anymore.

I put my jacket on my chair in the office. First I have to do some paperwork. It's my least favourite thing to do, but it has to be done.

After an hour and a half full of numbers, checks and phone calls, I'm ready with the paperwork. Eric has arrived half an hour ago and I guess he's preparing the food. Eric always wanted to be a chef, so this is his dream coming true. I walk to the kitchen and see Eric making some soup. "What soup do we serve today, mister Chef?" I ask. "Tomato soup. I wanted to make a simple soup today because there's a reservation for 20 people today so there will be lots of other work." I nod. "I hope Ashley will arrive in time. I know it's not easy to combine having a child and a job, but I hope she can make it in time. I don't want to serve a table of 20 people and the rest of the restaurant on my own." Eric laughs and nods. "I totally understand you, sis. It's not easy in the kitchen to prepare four different meals that has to be done at the same time. But I love the pressure. It keeps me going." I lift my eyebrow. "Well I'm happy that this pressure makes you happy, Ric." He throws a spoon at me and laughs. I walk to the dinning room to see if all the tables are ready. I look around and see that Ashley set the tables yesterday. She has put some tables together so we have a long table for 20 people. Good work, Ashley. I make my way to the bar and take a look in the reservation book.

20 people, Johnson Tim at 11:30AM
4 people, Hores Marilynn at 12:15PM
2 people, Edwards Prosper at 1:00PM

Okay, three reservations. That's good. It's 10:20AM now. It's time to do the dishes.

3:15PM

"That was a busy shift, huh?" Ashley laughs. I nod. "I'm so fucking tired." Ashley cleans the table while I am cleaning the glasses. "It was 11:30PM until Jett fell asleep and then John was in a romantic mood so I guess you know what happened," she winks. "Ehw, I don't need the details, Ash," I reply. She starts to laugh very loud. "Girls, be quiet, I don't want a headache!" Eric yells. Ashley and I look at each other and we start to sing as loud as we can. "Aaaah stop it!" he yells again. Our singing changes into laughing, again. "So tell me, why are you tired? Had a wild night yourself?" Ashley winks while laughing about what happened before. I raise my eyebrows and shake my head. "I went on a date yesterday and he stayed intul 1:15AM." Ashley turns her head immediately. "You did what? Is it with who I think it is? With your 'friend' Lucas?" she yells. I nod while laughing. She pulls me on a chair and takes a seat herself on the chair in front of me. "Tell. Me. Everything." So I repeat the story I told dad this morning, only with less details.

"That's the most romantic date I've ever heard about! My first date with John is nothing compared to what you've got. We went to Mc Donalds," she chuckles, "but it was amazing." She's blushing. She and John have been together for 5 years. They are the perfect example of a good relationship. Hopefully Lucas and I will have a future like that too. "I'm going home, Tessa has to work the evening shift so I'm free." Ashley turns her head to me. "What? Don't leave me alone, Mel," she complains. "Babe, I started a few hours earlier than you, so I deserve an evening full of Netflix," I chuckle. She throws a spoon to my head. "Why is everyone throwing spoons to my head today? First Eric and now you." She giggles. "Because you're annoying." Now it's my turn to throw a spoon. I run to the office to take my jacket and my other stuff. "Good luck tonight, people!" I walk outside the restaurant and turn left. It's so cold. I should've taken my bike, I would be home sooner. I look at the ground to avoid to strong wind in my eyes. Suddenly, I bump against someone. I look up and apologize. "Hi, aren't you Thomas' daughter?" the man asks. "Yes, I am. Oh, you are the doctor who examines my dad." He nods. "How is he doing?" he asks. "His illness got worse, but I guess you already know that. But he's strong. Yesterday he started to cough really hard among my boyfriend and he gave him a glass of water. He felt better afterwards." Doctor Johnson nods. "Does he cough a lot?" he asks. "No, it was the first time yesterday," I answer. "Let me know if he has to cough again. We will keep an eye on him and follow up the results." I nod indecisively. "I'll ask him when I get home. Thanks, Doctor Johnson. Good afternoon." He smiles. "Good afternoon, miss." We walk in different directions. There's one thing going on in my head: will dad make it until the 26th of December or will his illness decide something else?
