Martha. She didn't like the idea of having a girl move in to her house and having to deal with a girl that wasn't even her daughter. The news came to her and her husband like a blow and causing many marriage complications. The age that the girl had told her that her husband had been unfaithful to her during their 18 years of marriage and caused many arguments.
They yelled at each other and at the end blamed everything on her, She was the reason that she was having problems and appearing out of nowhere when everything was going so well. She wasn't ready to meet her nor did she care one bit. She allowed he husband Daniel to pay for all the medical bills, its not like it mattered anyways. But never did he had the courage to visit his daughter while she was hospitalized.
She never questioned him on the subject, afraid to hear his response and just wished that the girl had an unappealing personality. Thus, making the lack of affection easier on her and never having that guilty feeling lingering around her.
She rubbed her neck and looked out her kitchen window. In a few hours she will be arriving becoming one extra burden for her and her husband. She hears small footsteps run down the stairs and she turns around to meet the green eyes of her child.
Jacob Montgomery, a six year old boy who had the same looks like her father looked back at her with confused eyes.
"What happened dear?" She asked as she lowered herself down to his height.
He fiddled with his fingers and was deep in thought before answering,
"mom, is she nice?" his soft voice mixed with his innocence was like music to her ears. She looked back at him already knowing who he was talking about and debated with herself. She wanted to tell him that she was horrible and a monster; the other side wanted to assure him not to be scared. That mommy was there to protect him.
But she didn't know what to say.
So she chose the easy and safe answer "I don't know" she forced a smile on her face and tucked his long black hair away from his face.
She prepared him lunch as they chatted quietly waiting for the arrival of the girl that would bring forth so much change in their family. Daniel walked in the kitchen trying to fix his tie but struggled with it, so she walked in front of him, giving him a hand. She felt his nerves radiate off every inch of his body but the hint of light in his eyes proved to her that he was excited.
And it burned her inside, to see him so excited to meet the mute girl. The girl that will bring change. The girl he didn't know about until after her mother had died. After he had received that letter from the Seattle Court.
They hear the tires of the car move the gravel of their driveway as their chauffer parks itself and Daniel becomes rigid from the sudden tension her arrival has caused. He snaps back to reality as her the car comes to a completer stop and the drivers door is opened as the chauffer walks to the other side of the car.
They all walk outside and the stand by the entrance of their door as they watch her step out of the car.
Her resemblance to her father is so much alike, from the color of the brown wavy hair to the color of their eyes. Honey Brown.
The girl looks back at her father with a broken expression and she's almost sure that if it wasn't because she was standing next to her husband. He would run to her and greet her with so much love and affection. But nonetheless, Daniel smiles widely, the light of his happiness reaching the irises of his honey brown eyes.
Daniel walks in front of her and she holds on to Jacobs small hand as he pulls slightly wanting to meet his new sister.
"Is that all you have with you?" Daniel asks with concern. The girl looks down with shame and nods her head. Her cloths and small personal items only occupied one luggage because the rest had been lost during the plane wreck.
"Don't worry about it then, I'll get what you need tomorrow but for now I want you to meet Jacob and my wife" The girls eyes darted over to small boy whose hand was still held by his mother. She reluctantly let go of his arm and walked slowly behind him.
"Hi i'm Jacob, what's your name?" he asks as he looks at her with a big smile on his face.
The girl looks at him weirdly and looks back at her dad for help,
"Jacob, we discussed this already. She can't speak" the child frowned with disappointment.
"Can she understand me?" and the girl nodded.
"great! so come let me show you around" He grabbed her arm and dragged the girl away.
Daniel turned around to look at his wife and she did too.
"She isn't bad" he said with emotion in his eyes. She just shrugged and followed her husband back in.
She didn't want her there.
