There was something bothering David and he didn't know what it was but everytime he looked up from his work he saw Daisy smiling. It wasn't the smiling part that bothered him, it was the fact that she was smiling at what ever was on her phone. Sometimes he would catch her blushing and that alone would drive him crazy. He didn't know anything about this girl so he wasn't sure if she was into boys like a lot of other young ladies he had observed in that high school.
He had seen her come out of school with a smile that reached her eyes. He was stunned to see how the twinkle in her eyes and the smile that decorated her face was identical to the woman he met 15 years ago. He watched the young girl say good bye to the boy and didn't miss the sad smile she gave him as she walked towards the car.
He rubbed his temple as he heard another chime coming from Daisy's phone and she laughed at what ever was on her screen.
"David, what's wrong?" He relunctantly took his eyes away from his daughter and gave Martha his attention. She was drying off her hands on her apron. She was finishing the dinner in the kitchen and had taken a break as the chicken roasted. He took his glasses off and opened his arms for her to give her a tight embrace. She hesistated but sat in his lap and snuggled in the crook of his neck. She loved these small moments with her husband. Just two months ago she had believed that he was the perfect husband, that is, until they both had discovered about the mute little girl.
She tried swallowing the anger in her throat and focused on her hubsands' beating heart. She had almost forgotten the question that she had asked him when she felt his chest vibrate as he spoke.
"She keeps smiling and typing on that phone of hers", Martha didn't recognize the tone his voice. She had to get a better look at his face to understand what he was feeling when he spoke those words. His face was serious but confused. She felt like stroking his worry lines away but she didn't. Not everything was well in their marriage.
"She probably made some friends David stop fretting over something so insignificant" Martha couldn't contain the jealousy in her voice. It's true. She was jealous but she didn't know of who yet, either the child or the woman that shared a bed with her husband fifteen years ago. When ever she wanted details of what occur that night David wouldn't speak and leave the argument. He was so wrapped around his daughters fingers that she just had about enough.
She never agreed to letting her in her own house but there wasn't any man strong enough to make Davids mind change. He wanted the child and loved her the moment they were told about her. When she was in coma he would visit her everyday hoping for her to get better.
Luckily, before anything could get awkward the oven ringed and Martha made her way towards the kitchen. Her little son Jacob jumped down the stairs talking really loud to his friend on the phone and she heard David tell Daisy to wash her hands. She served everyone their food and Jacob was there next to her nagging about the food.
"Jacob please sit down" Martha didn't want to lose her patience and yell at her precious son. She had planned to relax right after dinner with a soothing bubbly bath.
They all sat down to eat before Daisy had come out of the bathroom. She came in silently and ate her food without looking up at any of them.
Martha took a sip of her red wine and blurted, "Daisy, sit straight and take your elbows off from the table". The girl looked up aruptly almost as if she was in another world and wasn't paying attention to the conversation they were having. Her eyes were wide with confusion and it just made Martha angrier.
"Didn't your mother teach you any manners, sit straight and take your elbows off from the table" He voice was clipped and cold. She never had spoken to Jacob in that manner which was very startling for David. Daisy flinched at her cold words almost like she got whiplash and her cheeks turned really red from embarressment.
"Martha!" David was bothered and seeing Daisy react so scared angered him. "Don't speak to her like that" he wasn't gentle with his tone and Martha was grinding her teeth. "I have to teach her manners since her mother didn't seem to have done a very good job at that".
Daisy was trying to eat her food without choking on it. Her throat had begun to close and she can already feel the tears prick in the corners of her eyes. She wanted her to stop talking about her mother like that. She wanted to yell and defend her mother with the words that failed to leave her mouth.
"That isn't your job" David had spit the words at Martha. Daisy was more than greatful that he was defending her when she couldn't do anything about it.
Martha finished her wine in one swing and was already filling her third glass. Her eyes were turning red but Daisy wasn't sure if it was the wine or the anger that seemed to pouring through her pores.
"It isn't my job? I'm sorry but her mother is dead. No way in hell will I let a girl come live in my house not knowing one thing about manners".
"You can't speak about her mother like that, you never met her" David was hot with anger.
"All I know and need to know about her is that she was a whore" the words seemed to slip out Martha's lips with no regret.
Daisy dropped the fork and got up from the table ignoring David calling her name. She was hurting and wanted to be alone. She didn't want to hear those words come out of Martha's mouth. Hearing them was harder than she had thought it would of ever been.
They could hear her bedroom door close upstairs and moments later they heard Artic Monkeys play in her room.
"Martha look what you've caused" Martha ignored his words and ate her food. Little Jacob had lost his apetite but was forced to eat everything on his plate.
David didn't finished his dinner and went to his office. He wasn't ready to face his wifes anger and his daughter's pain.
And upstairs was a girl crying and painting her emotions away and asking herself the same question over and over again.
'mom why'd you leave me here with these people?'
