Chapter #8: Morning Confessions
Chapter #8
Soon I saw the sun peeking up into the blue morning sky, and I could hear birds chirping all around me. Bird chirps always annoyed me in the morning, but when it was the afternoon, I found that I loved them for some weird reason. I rushed back into the bedroom, flopped onto the bed, and closed my eyes, pulling up the covers as I went. Right then, Mr. Marks and his wife woke up, and I thanked God silently for allowing me to have the time to get back to the bed.
They walked over to my bed, and Mrs. Marks said, “Poor girl. She has been through a lot of pain in a short amount of time. She wouldn’t have gone through so much pain if you had not shot her.”
“What?” Mr. Marks replied, “you think I tried to shoot her?” Mr. Marks sounded truly sorry, but I had grown to not trust people in the while that I had been away, on top of what my mother had taught me when I was young. Mrs. Marks did not reply to that question, so their conversation was suspended in awkward silence.
Finally, Mr. Marks broke into the quiet by asking, “should we wake her up or should we just let her sleep? The poor girl, if any of our children had gone through this, I would be outraged. I do feel bad about this, you know. I am not a stony hearted person, as you should know. Afterall, you married me, so you should know me by now.’’
Mrs. Marks replied, “Let her sleep. She will need it when she figures out where she is. You know I am still against keeping a captive princess in our house, especially a wounded one with no clue of where she is or why she is there.”
“Well, you weren’t given the choice, and neither was I. I am sorry if this is inconveniencing you in any way, but you will just have to deal with it, honey. You know it will only be one or two more days until..... You know.” Mr.Marks started to say and then they walked away, so I could not hear the rest of what he said.
Eventually, when I was sure that the Marks were gone, I got out of bed and dressed myself in the clothes that Mrs. Marks had laid out for me. The dress was very plain, a soft pink material called balzarine, which was a light material similar to cotton. I then descended the stairs to face my captors, attempting to put on a brave face as I did it. As I was entering the kitchen, Grace ran up and hugged me, chanting “The Princess is here! The Princess is here!” Well, at least I had one friend here. Then Jerusha came over to me and said “hi,” to me very shyly. I greeted her back, and then I looked up to take in the family that was holding me captive.
In the meantime, I learned that besides Grania and Jerusha there were three other children named Sven, Kate, and Sarai. And then of course the Mr. And Mrs. Marks were also present.
For a moment after Grania and Jerusha had backed off of me, they all stared at me. Then they abruptly stopped watching me and went back to their breakfasts. I guess since I didn’t sprout wings or a crown on my head, I was not far enough fascinating for them to delay their simple meal.
I suddenly asked Mr. Marks on an impulse, “why did you kidnap me?” He looked up at me, surprised, then quickly looked down. “What? Are you afraid of your own helpless prisoner? I am not the one that shot you.” I found that I was almost mocking him when I spoke this. Again, he did not say a word at my query.
Finally, after a long time of silence, Mrs. Marks said “dear, the princess asked you why you kidnapped her. Please answer, for I have been wondering the same thing for a while now, and you have kept me in the dark for far enough time by now.” Mr. Marks raised his head, shot his wife a dark, frustrated look saying you betrayed me, then turned his face back to me. He sighed, and then began talking.
“I did no do this out of my own choice. A long time ago, before I was married and had children, I was very poor. One day, as I was walking to a nearby city, I met a man who said he could give me all of the money I would ever need, and happiness on top of that, in exchange for one small favor. Of course I agreed, and I had not hear anything from him until last week. He came to our house while you were out shopping, darling. He said that it was time for me to repay my debt. I knew that if I didn’t obey, you and the children would be in danger.
“I don’t know how he found out where we lived, but all I know was that he was here. He said to me, ‘David, you know you still owe me a favor. Now it is time for you to repay your debt. All I ask is that you kidnap Princess Andriana. This is a small thing after all of the money that I have given you. Do this, and I will give you more money than you will know what to do with. But if you do not do as I wish, there will be consequences.’’
Mr. Marks looked down at his children playing around him on the floor and Grania sitting on his lap. Still looking down, he said, “Of course, you could not have expected me to object. I have these little ones to take care of. So I kidnapped you, and in three days, the man and his servants will come and take you away.”
I suddenly felt a rush of terror run through me. “Sir, what did this man look like?” I asked him, praying that he did not say what I knew he was going to say. I knew instantly that my nightmare had become a reality as he answered my question.
“Well,” he said, “I did not quite see his face. He was masked.” When I heard this, my breath caught in my throat. And then, being a true maiden in distress as I was, I fainted.
