in which a new kid comes to King's High School
John's POV
I walked, alone, up to the ugly brick gateway to hell also known as my highschool. Music blared through my headphones, (more specifically the original Broadway cast of Wicked, if you're wondering) and I was not looking forward to today. It was just another dreary old Monday. I would probably have a lot of homework, given my almost entirely AP classes, and the only good thing about this place most days is the escape from my house. Oh, and my friends of course. Sometimes I wonder how I have friends. I don't know why someone would choose to spend their time with me. But maybe that's just my father talking. I'm sure I'm not entirely useless.
Walking in the door, I was practically knocked over by someone attacking me in a hug.
"Hey John!" my attacker chirped.
"Good morning, Margarita." I said. She looked up at me, and pouted.
"Asshole." she said. I laughed.
"How was your weekend, Peggy?" I asked. She pulled away, and gave me a look.
"Shitty as always. Why would it be anything different?" Peggy sighed, and ran a hand through her curly caramel hair. "But it's over now, so I can't complain." I nodded, understanding what she ment entirely.
"Hey, but at least high school's almost over." I said. She giggled and nodded.
"Oh!! I just remembered!!!!" Peggy grabbed my arm and dragged me to Mr. Washington's classroom.
"Pegs, we don't have to get to homeroom yet." I said, laughing slightly at the randomness of my bunny friend. Yeah, you read that right. My dear bestest friend ever in the whole wide world is Animalic. That's the proper term for being born with the ears and tail of an animal. Peggy is a bunny, which really fits her personality. Small and cute.
"I know that. But look!" Peggy whisper screamed, pointing inside the classroom. I followed her hand, and saw what, or who, she was pointing at.
There, sitting at one of the front desks, scribbling furiously in a notebook, was a person I had never seen before.
They had slick black hair that hung down their back. They were dressed in an old sweatshirt and blue jeans, but that didn't matter. I barely noticed them. What I did notice were the two catlike ears poking out from his hair.
"His name is Alexander." a voice said from behind us, pulling me from my thoughts. Turning around, I was met with the face of my homeroom and AP US history teacher, Mr.Washington.
"Hey Mr. Washinton." Peggy said casually, trying to draw attention away from the fact that we were low-key spying on the new student.
"Hello, Miss Schulyer. You two should introduce yourselves. And it's rude to point. I don't think I have to remind you that it is extremely important to be kind to everyone, no matter what. You should know that better than most, Miss Schulyer." Washington said. Peggy frowned, her ears drooping down in shame.
"Yes, sir." we both said in unison. Mr. Washington gave us a small smile, so small you could barely notice it was there.
"Good." he turned and walked away.
"That was harsh." I muttered.
"He's just really passionate about Animalic rights. You know, since he..." Peggy didn't have to finish her sentence.
You see, for some reason that I don't know and Peggy probably knows but won't tell me, is that Animalics are kind of feared in society. It's hard for them to get jobs, get married, and a lot more things. And Washington... he is Animalic. More specifically, he's a lion. So he gets a lot of hate and not many people are in his class because of it. Things weren't too bad until someone actually set his house on fire. Thank goodness no one was home, but they lost 90% of their stuff and had to move. One kid who lives in their old neighborhood told the school the story. He said it was the only time he had seen Washington angry.
"Let's go introduce ourselves." I said. Peggy nodded, and the two of us walked into the classroom.
