Assignment

The Human-Covenant war left its scars on humanity. Billions dead, countless worlds reduced to piles of smoldering glass. Humanity sought many so-called "Magic Bullets" as a solution to end the war. One of these was the Spartan-III program.

While the Spartan-II program had created the finest soldiers humanity had ever seen, it was also expensive. Because of this UNSC HIGHCOM and the Office of Naval Intelligence sought a more cost-effective solution. The Spartan-IIIs were cheaper and were recruited from war orphans. Many signed up, eager for revenge against the aliens that had taken everything from them

The first two waves, Alpha and Beta, had been organized and then sent on suicide missions. Alpha company sent 300 to destroy a covenant shipyard. None would return, with the only survivors being hand-picked from the pool, and withheld from the mission. Beta Company faced a similar situation. With only two survivors, and a handful held back from the mission.

Gamma company had a different fate. After they completed training, the majority of their number were sent to aid beleaguered UNSC forces, as the war had only taken more turns for the worst. With the Covenant rumored to have found Reach.

Not all of them were sent on these missions. Spartan Gamma-713, Devin, had a different task. One pertaining to another secret project. As he makes his way to his briefing, he can't help but wonder what they have for him.

The briefing was quiet, only one ONI spook there to relay his mission, he didn't bother committing her name to memory. His task was to infiltrate project FREELANCER.

FREELANCER was another of the UNSC's "Magic Bullet" programs. Seeking a way to combine semi-powered armor suits, armor abilities, and A.I. integration similar to what was possible with Spartan Mjolnir armor, but drastically cheaper.

In recent months the reports from the Director of the project seemed to be more and more lacking. deciding to send someone inside, they fabricated the cover story of him being transferred in from the ODST program. His agent code name was Indiana. Paired with the smart A.I. Cypher, he will discover what Project Freelancer is hiding.
