Chapter 1

Rylie's POV

Looking into the dusty mirror I saw what I see every day; the long mousy brown hair, pale skin, and green eyes. I had hoped I would see someone different that day, someone people will remember. Perhaps not one of the blond beauties that go to my school, whose greatest achievement will probably be winning the school's talent show, but someone who's looked up to and actually did something with their life. But as I dressed in jeans and a plain sweater I knew that no matter the amount of time I spent thinking about it, I'll always be just another face in the crowd.

As I made my way to school I looked around to see that winter had begun early. The whole city was covered in a thin layer of snow but it was enough to give it the wintry atmosphere. I smiled slightly at the sight of the delighted children playing in the snow, and the love in their mothers eyes as they stood by watching. I  had always longed for my mother to look at me like that, but I learned that love just makes you weak and that the people that say they care the most will leave you to die without a backward glance.

School passed slowly as always, teachers sleepwalking through their responsibilities, dulled and discouraged by the endless amount of problems and pressures the students provide, and the students forgetting that getting an education was the original reason they actually came to school. I tried to pay attention to the endless droning of my teachers but quickly zoned out, my mind soaring somewhere far away. I dreamed of travelling the world, to feel the impact of fresh waves on my little boat, to feel the wind sweeping through my hair as I hike over a mountain. My greatest desire was to explore what is out there, depending on no one but myself. The ring of the school bell startled me out of my daydream however, bringing me back to the dreary classroom; back to my dull existence.

As I walked towards my locker I saw a ginger haired girl with a bright smile standing in front of it, expectantly waiting for me to reach her. While I wandered closer she bounded towards me, enveloping me in a bone crushing hug. I sighed and pushed her away, hoping to escape to the quiet places I usually went with lunch. It's not that I particularly disliked the red head named Heather, but I learned that it's just easier not to bind yourself to anyone, that way you won't get hurt when they let you down. Growing up without a father taught me that. He died nearly thirteen years ago, the cause however was still unknown to me. Every time I brought up the subject my mom started talking about something else, or else pretended to be busy with some mundane chore. The only thing I knew was that he's gone, leaving me forlorn and hopeless.

"Are you coming to the canteen?" she asked cheerfully, startling me out of my thoughts.

I quietly opened my locker and put in my books, avoiding the prying hazel eyes.

"No thanks, I'm going to the library."

Without waiting for an answer I walked away, my mind already seeking refuge in the fantasy world of a book.
