Hunting Mate

Chapter One

It was another long night of paroling the woods and I, Layton Hammond, got stuck doing the late shift yet again.

I look at my friend, Frankie Knight, who was sniffing the air for any scent that may need our attention, Frankie and I are wolves, not all the time but we can shift into being a wolf.

Frankie sighs again 'this is so boring, I think I'm going to go to sleep' he said, as wolves, we can't talk we can only mink-link, which means talk telepathically I guess, you can say. I laugh 'don't let Joe hear you say that' I said back, Joe was the Alpha of our pack.

I look at Frankie again 'how are things with you and Kali?' I ask him, Kali is Frankie's fiancée, Frankie imprinted on her 3 years ago and they got together half a year after that. Imprinting is falling in love in a sense-it's when you know that person is meant for you, they are your soulmate. When you imprint it's like the gravity shift and the only thing holding to you the earth is that person, they are your reason for living.

I haven't actually imprinted myself so I can't tell you for certain but that's how everyone explains it when we talk about it 'great, she wants a pup' he told me I just stare at him 'dude, don't get stuck' I joke and he laughs, the sun was starting to rise, Frankie and I came out here before it was starting to set.

I sigh walking around again, it's odd that I've been able to shift into a wolf since I was 16 yet I've never had to use the bathroom while being one, I heard footsteps snapping me out my thoughts, I look at Frankie 'hunters' I say, we both sniff the air, try find out their location so we could stay away from them 'Joe, there's hunters out here' I warned our Alpha 'stay alert, thanks for the warning I will let Timmy and Kyle know' he said back.

Frankie looks at me, I could smell that there was more than one and that they were getting closer 'north, lake' Frankie told me I nod and we run north, trying to keep out of sight as best we can I could smell more, how many are there? Frankie looks at me worried 'there's no way out' he said, I look around quickly going in circles. I stop, there's only one thing I can do 'ready to make a run for it?' I said before giving him a chance to answer back, I howl to alert the rest of the pack, we were in trouble.

That only alerted the hunters to us but now we were running as fast as we could to get away from them. This is bad, really bad.

We run to Frankie's house and he shifts back to human form quickly covering himself and lets himself in his house, I go inside still in my wolf form, I don't think his fiancée would want to see me form back.

She comes out of the kitchen and instantly runs to hug Frankie "I was panicking when I heard the howl" she said then looked at us "I will get you both clothes" she said heading upstairs, right now I can't communicate with Frankie or Kali as Kali isn't a wolf and Frankie was in his human form. I let the other knows we managed to get back to Frankie's safe and told them there was quite a few and that we had just made it out alive.

Kali came down "here you go, I know you aren't the same size Layton but it will have to do for now" she said and left the room, I phased back into my human form and get dressed "that was a close call" Frankie said I nodded "and you said it was boring" I joked he laughed. Kali came back out after we gave her the all clear and she hugged Frankie tight.

They were cute together. Kali is 5'9", she has short brown hair and she has bronze skin tone thanks to her father being African American and her mother being German. While, Frankie was 6'4" he was bald thanks to a condition he has which makes his hair particles not grow properly, if he ever did grow out hair he would only have patches of it and it would fall out within a couple of days. Frankie had golden skin as he used to be a lifeguard on the beach so spend plenty of time outsides.

I sit down on their couch and pet their dog, I laughed when I first found out that they got a Husky, Frankie sat next to me "you know the other day, I couldn't sleep so I came down here, phased and just played with Shepherd, it's the only time he likes me" he laughs, I'd never thought about playing with a dog in my wolf form although I was thinking about getting a dog but I don't have time for one.

Kali hands me a cup of coffee "what time do you start work?" she asks I sigh looking at the clock on the wall "3 hours" I answer, I could hear people passing the house, I look out of the window, I see big guns and loads of people I look at Frankie and he comes over to looks "whoa, I'm glad I got in when I did" he said I look at him "what did you except Hunters without guns?" I joked.

I sigh, and finished my coffee "I'd better get going, I need to shower and get into my work clothes then get to work" I told them we said our goodbyes and I left. I smiled at one of the hunters as I passed "watch out mate, there's a wolf out here somewhere" one of them said I pretended to look worried "thanks for the warning if I see one I will scream for you" I said and walked away.

I walked into my house and into my bathroom, my house was actually a cabin but it was small and didn't make me feel so alone like I would if I lived in a proper house. I got in the shower and then went to work as planned.
