Chapter 3
My Mustang shot forward like a rocket, jerking Daniel back into his seat. As the car accelerated, zipping by our opponent, Daniel let out a scream and started hitting the dashboard excitedly. He was practically jumping up and down in his seat which got me laughing. I had never raced with someone else in the car with me before so it was a new experience for both of us. Before I knew it, we were at the end of the street and I had to swing the car around to head back, driving on the dirt for a moment. The other racer was right behind me as we headed back to the finish line, a wicked smile formed on my face as I slowed down just a bit so we were side by side. Once we were closer to the finish line I did the cliche thing and pushed my gas pedal to the ground, making us zoom past the line and leaving our opponent in the dust.
It took a while before I finally stopped the car and put it in park. I looked over at Daniel and couldn't help but laugh at his goofy expression. It was like watching a kid in a candy shop, who just got a sugar high.
“That. Was. Amazing!” His excitement was contagious. Before I knew it I was smiling like an idiot too.
Don't get me wrong, I love racing and get a thrill every time. It like a drug to me, I’m addicted to the adrenaline rush and the speed makes me feel like I can fly. But it was different with Daniel, his excitement was bubbling over like a pot without the lid, while mine was a burning fire inside me, wanting more.
“Hey!” Alex yelled from outside my window, making me snap my head to the side. I groaned as pain shot through my neck while I was undoing my seat belt. I was grumbling curses as I opened the car door.
“What the hell Alex? Couldn't you have just knocked or something?” I questioned her as I got out, and slammed the door with my butt since my hands were massaging my neck.
“Sorry Zoe, I didn't mean to. I'm just so pumped from your win and I needed to congratulate you!” She squealed the last bit as she wrapped me into a tight hug. This is normal for her but at the moment my neck was injured so her pushing it to the side made it worse.
“Shit Alex!” I screamed at her and pushed her away. “What part of my neck freaking hurts don't you understand?” I said a little- just a little- quieter and threw in a death glare at the end.
“Here let me help.” I heard Nick say from behind me. I was going to turn around and ask him how when I felt a pair of warm hands on my neck. My entire body froze as he rubbed my neck, sending tingles everywhere.
On the outside I made myself look calm but on the inside I was freaking out. On one hand I didn't want him to touch me because I was still mad from earlier plus I didn't want him getting any ideas. But on the other hand, he was actually doing a good job of making my neck feel better. Can you guess which side won over? The one that meant my neck didn't hurt as bad.
Alex noticed that I didn't push him away and gave me a knowing look. In return I sent her another glare.
“Hey, Zoe. You got a minute?” Kara asked, cutting off whatever Alex was about to say. Thank god.
“Sure, what's up?” I decided now was a good time to step away from Nick so I used talking to Kara as an excuse. I stepped forward out of Nick's hold and came to stand in front of her.
Kara was a very outgoing girl with purple hair and green eyes. She had lots of tattoos running up and down her arms but they didn't make her look any tougher, she was just an adorable person.
“So you think you could do us all a favor and sing for us?” She had this huge smile on as she asked and even though I felt like crap at the moment I couldn't help the smile that appeared on my face as well. “Please! I know it's last minute but everyone really wants to hear you.”
