Why Do We Love?

why do we love?
for comfort?
for companionship?
someone to protect us from the deathly grip of loneliness?
to smother our senses with sweet honey-like impulses until all reason is lost?
why do we love?
to feel as though we're needed?
to have a purpose?
because the idea that someone out there is thinking of you, even for a second, is enough to fuel our empty wells of self esteem?
why do we love?
to calm the darkness within?
to crack the shells around our hearts so that just a little bit of light can creep in?
but what happens when the love is gone?
we superglue the cracks back together and the shell is whole again, blocking out all light.
we refuse to let the light in,
for fear we'll crumble without someone else to carry us along.
to guide us through our lives.
But we are stronger than the shells encasing our hearts
and we must learn to love ourselves
before we can truly love another.
