My mind was running wildly, my heart thundering in my chest, and my trembling body threatening to throw me over the edge. We were sitting on the roof of the mansion, and I was attempting to slow my breathing down. I was cold and certainly scared. Griffin was across from me. His amazing eyes were watching me like a hawk eyeing its prey. Terror was pumping through my veins heavily.

So many things were running through my mind. What’s going on? How did we get up on the roof? What did Griffin do to that girl? Then a question flashing in my mind and I thought I was going to pass out. Is he going to hurt me, too?

“You calmed down?” He asked, looking at me with the slightest hint of worry.

I took a deep breath and looked up at him nervously, trying to concentrate on his eyes and not the distant ground below us. I didn’t even remember getting up here!

“I think so…” I responded quietly. My heart was gradually slowing down.

“Good,” He glanced around then back to me, “Callie, there’s a lot I need to explain…” He said. My eyes widened a little. If he was using my name, then he had to be serious.

I nodded for him to continue.

He took a deep breath as well.

“I’ve been living here for a long time. A very long time.” He started slowly. I waited patiently to hear what else he had to say. His eyes closed and he began to speak. “Long ago, I was in love with a beautiful girl,” A small smile rose to his lips, something that shocked me beyond belief, “She meant everything to me. After I had confessed my feelings for her, we decided to run away together. It all seemed perfect, and so wonderful. But as time went on and we came closer to running off, she changed.” The small smile faded away from him.

“She suddenly became insecure,” He continued, “Not with herself, but with me. Every time I’d talk to anyone, let alone a girl, she’d freak out and accuse me of cheating. It was horrible! She’d never let me leave her sight, sometimes not even my own home!” He shook his head. “But I loved her, so I put up with it. But one night I managed to sneak out to see my friends. I spent the whole night with them, and it was the most fun I’d had in months. Then I came home. She was there, screaming at me and saying I was out with another girl.

“I fought with her and told her that I was only with friends and that I’d never do anything to hurt her that way. Then she came up with a plan. She said that if I did something for her, she’d believe me. I was desperate to patch things up, so I agreed. I said I’d do anything.”

He sighed.

“She drug me here, and cast a spell. One that ensured I couldn’t leave this property until she returned satisfied that I was telling the truth.” His face saddened. “It’s been about a century and I haven’t seen her sense,” His eyes dropped down to his lap and I swore I saw tears in them. “I guess my love wasn’t enough.”

I stayed quiet, unsure of what to say.

“Griffin…” My voice was so quiet; I was surprised that he heard me. “…I don’t know what to say. I’m still confused.”

He nodded.

“I’m sure.”

“G-Griffin…” I said, eyeing him warily, “What did you mean…a century ago?”

He looked me straight in the eyes with his dark blue ones. Both he and I knew an explanation wasn’t needed. Deep down something told me the truth. But it didn’t seem possible. Slowly my brain racked together things and put the pieces into place.

My breathing started to speed up again. The memory of Griffin’s face when he caught up to me was burned into my skull. His wide panicked eyes, his ragged breathing, and the blood rolling down his chin and along the smooth skin on his neck seemed so fresh to me. I closed my eyes slowly.

He was a vampire.
