It seemed like forever that we sat up there. Griffin and I were sitting beside each other looking up at the moon. We weren’t really talking. Just sitting quietly. He seemed surprised that I was so calm when I found out about his big secret. Truly I felt very intrigued. My housemate was vampire for crying out loud! How cool was that?! It became apparent to me that he was slightly happy to have me know what he was. Now he didn’t have to hide it anymore. With me, that is. But I still had questions I needed answers to.

“Griffin?”

“Yeah?” He asked.

“How did your girlfriend trap you here?”

“Vampires have special powers—”

“—Like on Twilight?”

I spoke without thinking.

Griffin paused and looked at me with a confused expression.

“Twi…what?” He frowned, “What’s that?”

A blush flared onto my cheeks.

“Nothing. So how does this ‘charms’ thing work?”

“Long ago, before technology and such breakable things were made, humans and vampires walked among the earth side by side. Us vampires hunted wild animals instead of people. But there was talk. Your kind was interested in our powers, and we were interested in your gifts. We had the ability to grant immortality, in exchange for one thing – the human’s knowledge of the Dark Arts.” Griffin smirked and shook his head bitterly, “It was a stupid idea from the beginning. All seemed well. But the Head Royal Vampire and the leader of The Men were both wary of each other. Both secrets were powerful and if one got it all for themselves, then ultimate supremacy would be theirs.

“When this idea set in, greed began to grow in their hearts. The hunger for complete power festered inside them until it became too much to bear. A war broke out. And all that came from it was a total massacre. Both sides were evenly matched and could have held up a stand-still for eternity. But the leaders refused to give up until the other died. No one knows who made the first attack, and now it doesn’t matter. Very few remember this tale. Only royal descendants and some vampires who witnessed such pain do. Humans obviously have no knowledge that this had ever taken place, let alone that we exist.”

I sat there quietly. This was unreal. A war against vampires? Who would take them on?

“Which are you?”

Griffin pursed his lips slightly.

“What’d you mean?”

“Are you a witness? Or a royal?”

Griffin blinked then let out a small laugh.

“What do you think?”

“Royal,” I responded plainly.

“You’re right,” Griffin raised his eyebrows slightly, “How’d you guess?”

“Your arrogance.”

The vampire shot me an irritated glance, then looked away. After a few minutes of silence, I spoke up awkwardly.

“Are you…” I hesitated for a moment, “Are you going to…you know…eat me?”

A sudden deep bellowing caused me to jump. It took me a second to realize he was laughing. Not harsh or forced, but just a normal laugh.

“Of course not!” He chuckled, “You’re so stupid. Your blood would probably taste horrible!”

I narrowed my eyes.

“Then how do you…keep up your apatite?”

He let out a tired sigh and laid down, placing his hands behind his head casually. People sneak over here all the time to see the ‘abandoned mansion’. Mostly teens came, but sometimes young adults too. And each one that came almost instantly became a part of my meal.”
