Kerry's POV (Saturday)
''Kerry Christopher'' I told the new girl shacking her hand. ''And you are?''
''Emily James.'' She replied smiling politely at me. She was one of the people that actually talked to me. Maybe because she's new and doesn't know the rules. In the orphanage talking to me is a crime. No one in here likes me. I have been bullied since my first day here 5 years ago, just after my father gave me away. My mother died in a car crash and my dad was struggling to support me. He gave me away.
FLASHBACK
They let me say goodbye to my father, who decided I was too much. 2 years I've been coping with my mothers death and now this. My life is a wreck. I looked up at a dark brown old building in front of me. There were a lot of signs everywhere saying what people could and could not do. I didn't have a chance to read more than a couple when a slim tall woman in heels and a red dress lead me inside the building. We walked past a big dinning room
''This is where you will eat.'' The woman said to me with a voice which showed no expression. As if she didn't care about my presence and wanted to get all of this over with. She fixed her long caramel hair and continued walking, the sound of her heels filling the quiet and empty dining room. We walked into a completely different room filled with beds and pink wallpaper on the walls. I guess this was the girls room.
''This is where you will sleep.'' She instructed pointing to the bed next to a big window with plain white sheets. She passed me a big cardboard box. ''Put your stuff in here.'' I nodded and took the box. I started emptying my bag and putting everything in the box. It didn't take long, I never had that much clothes.
''Where are all the children?'' I asked curiously.
''Outside.'' She replied and left. She left me in the room by myself. I felt nervous and scared to meet the other children. Will they like me? What if they don't? I had a big headache by the time I ran out of questions which could not be answered. Soon a crowd of girls rushed in and stared at me.
''Oh this must be a new girl!'' One of them announced bitterly to the other girls. She had pale skin and dark brown curly hair. She was one of the few with very fancy clothes on.
''Listen you Little brat! If you want anyone to ever look at you, you will follow my rules. This room and all the girls belong to me! And if you get on the wrong side you will be on your own. Understood?'' She yelled at me and I looked a bit scared. How was I going to survive all this time in this place?
For the first week I tried to follow her rules and do what she always told me, until I got fed up and told one of the caretakers who told me to shut up. Just like she said, everyone avoided me. Not like anyone cared about my existence in the first place. I was all alone from day 1, until a boy older than me asked me if I was alright. His name was Cole and him and other of his friends were the only ones that accepted me. I only focused on them from that day. The people that mattered to me and cared instead of those girls who only want everyone to be the same.
Flashback Over
''Are you okay?'' The blonde, short girl Emily James asked me and I snapped out of my thoughts. I was going to make sure her first day isn't as bad as mine.
''Yeah, I'm fine. Would you like me to show you around the place?'' I replied to her as nicely as possible.
''Yes please! That would be great!''
I volunteered to show her around because I didn't want her to get one of the grumpy caretakers that I got. And also so that I could tell her in detail about life in here and who she should get along with and who to avoid.
''Tell me, how do you think people will respond to my presence in here?'' She questioned and I got ready to explain.
''Well, the girls will make you follow rules that you might not want to follow.''I stated thinking of my first day again.
''What happens if I don't?''
''You will not exist here.''
''Did you ever break the rules?''
''On numerous occasions. They just pretended I didn't exist and they would talk behind my back. Sometimes when we were in the room they would talk nasty things about me, right in front of me, like I wasn't there.'' I said casually. ''This is the dining room'' I took her to where that woman took me on the first day, even though it was quiet the sound of her heels filled my head as I looked into the room.
''So, do you have any friends?'' She looked up at me, this time looking like she felt sorry for me. I felt sorry for me too.
''Yes, I could introduce you. I have 4. There's Cole, Kyle, John and Tom. I think they'd be happy to meet you.'' I smiled sweetly at her and she returned it. ''Here's the girls room. There's an empty bed next to mine everyone is avoiding me here so you could join me if you like.'' I pointed to the bed next to mine and she didn't hesitate and sat on the bed . I gave her a cardboard box and we unpacked her things together. We talked and had a laugh, we got along quite well. She seemed way nicer than other people in this place. Amy walked in, the girl with curly hair.
''Oh a new girl! Listen you! If you don't follow my ru-'' She got cut of by Emily.
''No, I will not follow your rules. You do not own this place and just because you're the richest doesn't mean you can tell people what to do. You have been left by your parents just like loads of other people. Money doesn't make you special.'' She finished and Amy's expression changed into an angry one and she stormed out. Playtime hasn't finished yet and people weren't coming in for a while. I smiled at Emily and admired her bravery. She actually lost the chance to be with the richest girl there is in this place just to be with me, a poor helpless 12 year old girl.
''How do you now she is the richest?'' I asked her and she smirked.
''I met her before.''
At lunchtime we went to the dining room and ate our sandwiches. She kept constantly looking around, getting used to this dark scary place. After we finished I introduced her to my friends.
''Cole, Kyle and Tom this is Emily James, shes new here and she could use some more friends.'' I told them looking around for John while she shook their hands.
''Where is John?'' I questioned confused.
''Oh, one of the caretakers called for him to come to the office'' Replied the 15 year old boy with scruffy brown hair and brown eyes who was Cole. I gulped. We all knew what this meant. Exept Emily maybe.
''You don't mean that.'' I gasped quietly fear and sadness hitting me.
''I'm afraid yes. They never get called to the office unless someone takes interest in them.'' He replied looking at the floor sadly.
''What does it mean?'' Emily questioned puzzled.
''Means hes getting adopted.'' I stated rather upset.
I didn't see him again that day, but we got informed that hes leaving tomorrow. He was one of my bestfriends and now hes leaving. Not just that, but no one seemed to ever be interested in me. Most of my friends got people interested in them and now one is getting adopted. They're all way older than me, and no one wants me as their child. Maybe I'm not meant to be anybody's child? Maybe my job is to stay and look after Emily? What if she gets adopted? Shes a year younger than me, more people might want a younger child. I fell asleep as my mind got tired of thinking too much.
