My family thinks I'm dead. Maybe it's best they do. I'm wanted by the entire Republic, and maybe it wouldn't be best if they caught me and found out who I really am.

My name is Night. Not my real name, just a nickname. 'June' was killed by the Republic because I failed my trial.

I discovered the truth behind my parents deaths when I was nine. The republic killed them. My brother, Metias, and I were blinded with loyalty, we didn't even see reality.

The republic is awful.

Growing up, Metias practically raised me. Our parents died in a crash when I was two years old, so I don't have much of a recollection of them.

I'm from the Ruby sector, a Gem also known as rich sector. Metias is a solider in the Republics army. Not just any soldier, either. He's a captain. His best friend, Thomas, is his lieutenant, and growing up, the two of them were my only friends.

And now they're hunting me down to kill me.

I hear a groan come from the other room, and I know that Tess is awake.

Tess is my best friend and pretty much my little sister. I found her on the streets in an alley, and I helped her. It took forever for her to finally warm up to me, but now we're pretty much inseparable.

She was in the same situation I was. She failed her trial and escaped the camps they shipped us off to.

"Night? Why are you up so early?" She groans.

I'm still not used to people calling me that, "Can't sleep. Nightmares are back."

I had nightmares around a year ago, but then they went away for awhile. They were usually about Metias having to kill me, then it was about me killing Metias. I would never kill my brother.

"Did you check on Eden?"

Eden was her little brothers best friend, and her neighbor. He had gotten the plague, and nobody's came with a cure for him. We were saving up for one.

Daniel-better known as day-, one of Eden's older brothers, is in the military. Well, training. He scored a perfect 1500 on his trial, and was shipped straight to the best military colleges. Drake was one of the best of the four best, and he was sent to start his freshman year there.

He either doesn't know anything about Eden, or he can't do anything about It. If he works hard, he can get listed in the military early, and get money to buy a cure.

Until then, Tess and I have found it is our duty to help Eden. He been getting worse, and his family is so poor they can hardly provide for him.

Times like these I wish I hadn't failed my trial, and I was back in my old life.

"He's not going to make it very long, Night. He needs the cure," Tess says looking in the widow of Eden's bedroom.

"We don't have enough for it yet.. Unless I steal it?" I suggest slyly.

"No. You've done enough crazy stunts to get you killed this week."

"He needs the medicine, Tess. I'm going to the hospital," I say firmly. I'm not changing my mind about this.

"Well, I know there isn't arguing with you so, go ahead. Stay safe. Don't get yourself killed."

I give her a big grin, "wouldn't dream of it."

The first thing I see of the hospital are the military vehicles in front of the building.

Why are they here?

I need a plan. I see a puddle of mud, and get an idea. I walk over to the puddle of mud, and begin to cake myself in it. I cover myself from head to toe, then cut my cheeks with one of my knives. Blood trickles down my face.

Now that I'm disguised, I walk into the hospital, pretending to stumble. Some of the soldiers and patrons glance at me, but none seem to recognize me.

I sit down in a seat, keeping my eyes glued to the clock.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

Forty-five minutes.

An hour.

After the guards switch shifts, I stand up stumbling over to one of them. I need a key card.

I grip tightly onto one of their jackets. They usually keep the keys in the right inside pocket.

"Please," I breathe heavily, digging my hand around his pocket discreetly, "I need help."

I grab the key just as he shoves me away. I collapse to the ground, pulling my arms close to my stomach, my jacket hiding the card.

"Bathrooms over there, miss. Go clean yourself up and don't touch me again, slum."

The soldier goes back to talking, not suspecting anything. I make my way to the bathroom, and lock the door behind me. I have to wait again.

I count down the minutes since I got in.

Ten.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Forty.

Fifty.

Sixty.

I open the door and peek out. The soldiers start to leave the posts, switching once again. I completely walk out, my eyes setting on one person.

Thomas.

He stares in a direction, and I follow his eyes to see who he's longingly looking at. Metias.

I should leave, if Metias sees me he'll know who I am.

No. No backing out now. I turn away, and make my way up the stairs.

There's three stories in the hospital and a basement. The first one is mainly waiting rooms, cafeterias, desks, and things like flu, broken bones, etc.

The second floor is diseases and occasionally a plague survivor that they draw blood from.

The third floor is the medicine labs, where they store the medicine and supplies they use in the hospital.

In the basement, quarantine. They experiment on sick people and use them to find cures. They usually don't make it out of there once they go in. I would know.

Before I can make any second thoughts, I'm facing the door of the medicine storage.

No turning back now.
