"Maybe Eira feels awkward, that's why she's hiding it."

"She doesn't look awkward. She seemed keen to invite you in."

"I haven't told her. Eira's pretty smart," Jason forced his hands to stay still, holding his mug of tea, "she might've been suspicious."

The two went quiet, studying each other until Mrs. Riley finally smiled. "Wait till I tell her dad. He's been all about keeping his daughter by his side and that staying single is fine..."

Please don't.

"I'm all team single if you can't find the right guy but doesn't mean she should shut herself off," Mrs. Riley gave a dismissive wave of her hand in the air and sipped her tea. "I'm glad you were honest with me."

Ha, sure.

"You should tell her, one day. I can tell you are a good boy," and as Mrs. Riley said so, she gave Jason a shuddering glare. "Am I right?"

"I'll do my best, ma'am."

"Call me Penny. Ma'am makes me sound old." She chuckled, eyeing the window. "Eira's been out there for ages. No one calls her that long except me."

They both broke off with chuckles. "I can go and check on her, if you'll allow me."

"Of course," Mrs. Riley grinned. "Her tea is getting cold."

Jason placed down his tea and made his escape, breathing a sigh of relief when the door closed behind him. He padded around the house, spotting her fluttering ponytail in the wind.

"Eira?" He said, stifling a chuckle. "Remember, we are gym buddies. I moved away from your math class-"

Eira suddenly ran past him, ignoring what he said.

"Wait! Eira! Where are you going?" He was going to follow her, but something caught his eye. She abandoned her phone on the ground, and it was emitting a blue light. He scooped it up.

"Hello?"

"Jason? Where's Eira?"

Ms. Kate's voice.

"I'm not sure. She just left?" Jason retraced his steps out of the garden and onto the pathway. His pace quickened and he found himself jogging in Eira's general direction. "She's running away, but why-"

"Jason, listen carefully," Ms. Kate's voice suddenly tensed. "I saw her assessment report. Her data had weird fluctuations – her powers are showing abnormal activity. I want you to follow her, but don't approach her."

Jason's shoes scraped on the gravel road, halting to a stop when the house door opened. Mrs. Riley came out, brows etched with concern. "What's going on?"

"Nothing to worry about. I'll get her back!" Jason gave a wave, running before Mrs. Riley could stop him.

What is Eira up to?
