Kate's POV

Jace pulled out a vest for me and I went to the bathroom to put it on. I locked the main door to the bathroom and took my shirt off. I looked at the scars on my stomach and remembered the day I got them.

*Flashback*

Nick was on his knees with a gun against his head. Ruth had called me a week ago about his case. There was a bank robbery and the man took him hostage.

"Sir, let's talk this out."

"Come any closer girl, and I'll shoot."

I didn't dare move. He walked closer and closer to me. I put my hand on my gun ready to draw it. There were at least 5 other officers but I was here to negotiate not shoot. He pointed the gun at me.

"Listen here girl; I'll shoot if you threaten me."

"We don't want to threaten or hurt you we're here to talk."

"DON'T LIE TO ME!"

He pulled the trigger twice. I hit the ground hard and then I heard another shot. Pain seared through my body and then disappeared. The sky was beautiful tonight. I heard and saw people but they were drifting away. I started blacking out.

I woke up in the hospital a few days later.

*End Flashback*

I quickly put on my vest and shirt and headed outside.

"Kate, are you ok? You look pale," Jordan asked.

"I'm fine," I told Jordan.

"Ready Kate?" Jace asked.

"Always," I replied. I quickly kissed Jordan on the cheek.

"I'll be back soon I promise," I told Jordan.

"Just be careful I don't want to lose you," he whispered in my ear.

I hugged him and walked toward Jace. We walked to the van. I got in the back so I could get out quickly when we got there. I remember the night I was shot. It was just like tonight.

*Flashback*

The sun left a dim glow in the sky as we approached the abandoned house. I was nervous that night, I had gone on plenty of missions but something didn't feel right. The van stopped and we rushed out. He walked outside dragging Nick by his collar. Nick had bruises and bloodstains all over his face and his arms were all scratched up. He saw me and smiled the best he could.

*End Flashback*

"Kate," Jace said waving his hand in front of my face.

"Yeah?"

"2 minutes until we get there."

"Got it."

"Are you sure you can do this?"

"It was 2 years ago, I'm fine."

The van stopped on the side of the street. We quickly exited the van and walked down the side walk towards an abandoned office building. We walked into the parking lot. I couldn't believe my eyes Ally was lying on the ground bruised and beaten. I didn't run to her, I knew better. We walked toward the building searching for the kidnapper. I heard something behind me but couldn't turn around fast enough.

"Jace!" I screamed.

A pair of arms grabbed me and a hand covered my mouth. The man pulled out a gun and pointed it at me. I need to stay calm.

"Sir, let's talk," Jace said.

"Really?" The man said cocking his gun. I heard someone coming up behind him but he didn't notice. They hit him over the shoulder knocking him to the ground.

"If I'm going down then someone's coming with me!" He said as he pulled the trigger twice. There was a white hot flash of pain through my body.

"KATE!" Ally and Jace screamed simultaneously. I grabbed my torso and tried to stay standing but gravity won pulling me down. My head hit the pavement making my vision blurry. People were hovering over me and I could see the stars behind them. Shining and sparkling on the black background of night. I'm really tired; I think I'll take a nap.
