Stella
I frowned at the board. I hated lectures.
I was usually pretty good at paying attention, but lectures were especially bad in this class. Listening to those one-in-a-million attractive teachers was one thing, but the boring old ones? A total nightmare.
Everyone has had one of those teachers who are ready to retire; they may have trouble walking or even talking, but it's the worst when they don't even care about the subject material. They give lectures like they stopped caring 20 years ago.
I felt a small piece of paper hit the side of my head and land on my desk. Looking to my right I saw my friend Pru giving me a pleading look. She nodded towards the paper and mouthed open it.
I read her note and smiled.
Time: 3:00 PM
Place: Library
Plan: rally to get Mr. Moore to retire
Be there or be square (AKA be forever tortured by this boring old teacher)
Shaking my head, I quickly wrote a response and threw it back at her.
Hey, I think he loves this class. He's very engaging, it must be his passion.
I realized my sarcasm flew right over her head when she looked over at me sharply, mouth open. "He is so not into this class," she whispered to me, smiling. "Just look at him!"
I did as she asked and watched him. Instead of writing on the board while giving his lecture like most teachers would, he was standing stock still at the front of the class, reading off of a sheet of paper like a script.
I held back a laugh and leaned back over to her. "You're right. Maybe he should retire."
The bell rang, signaling the end of class. I packed up my things and started following Pru out the door to lunch when Mr. Moore called me over.
"Stella!" He said excitedly. I was one of his best students, so he was always happy to see me. "I have some good news for you, young lady."
I turned to Pru and waved, telling her I'd catch up with her later.
I looked back at Mr. Moore. "Okay, what's up?"
He smiled. "I've got another student for you to tutor."
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. I didn't want any more students to tutor! I'd already tutored 6 other students on and off throughout the school year, and I was excited to finally have some free time for the rest of the year.
Instead of frowning, I gave him a fake smile. "How long will I have to tutor her for?"
"I'm sorry to say, but it's actually a boy this time. I know, I know, you don't normally tutor boys," he said, putting his hands out in front of him when I began to protest, "but this boy is doing very poorly. He has all F's and he needs to bring his grades to a D average in order to stay on the football team and graduate. I suggested he be assigned to you. You're the best we have here at Glenmoore High."
God, he was a guy and on the football team? Those boys were so hard-headed, it would be nearly impossible to get this guy to pass all his classes.
"You will be tutoring him for the rest of the school year. We have found that if he does not have constant assistance from his tutors, he will fall behind again." He continued apologetically.
I let out a groan. "Three whole months?! Are you joking? I don't think I have time for that, Mr. Moore. I'm busy worrying about my own graduation, let alone another student's." I resisted the urge to grovel on my knees for my now-lost freedom. "Please consider someone else." I pleaded.
In reality I could probably keep up with my own homework as well as someone else's, but I was so excited to have the rest of the school year to myself and to spend extra time with my family before I left for college in the Fall.
"I understand you may be upset about this, Ms. Davis," Mr. Moore said sadly. He gave me pleading eyes and continued, "but we've tried everyone. Even Noah couldn't help this boy. I'm sorry, but you're our last option."
He handed me a piece of paper with contact information. "Here's his information so you can arrange a meeting place. If you have any more questions, you have my email and the number for the tutoring center. I trust you to help him, Stella."
I sent him a reluctant smile and turned away to head to lunch. Before I left I turned back to him with one last question. "Who did you say this boy was again?"
Mr. Moore looked at me sadly once again. "You'll be tutoring Christopher Dalton."
