NeverTrustAnAuthor - Renegades

Summary:

Call us what you want.

     Thieves.

     Heroes.

     Sinners.

     Saints.

In the end it doesn't matter.

We break the law. We do what others are afraid to do and we play by our own set of rules.

     They can't control us.

So they opt to take us out instead.

But I'd rather burn than be burned.

So if it's a war you want from us,

     It's a war you'll get.

     Together they were legends.

But for tales to become legends, they must first perish.

Oh, goodness.

Where to start on this story . . .

Well, I guess I'll do a bit of an intro. I had the pleasure of reading Renegades before all of this contest business started, when I was still just a small, premature little Gushi. And, well, what can I say? I loved it.

I don't want to ruin anything for you, so I'll just go over what won me over almost immediately—the characters. There are five MCs: Iko's our friendly neighborhood hacker, and Dez is the lady-killer thief. Then there's Noel, who seems like the stablest, awesome guy ever, Parker, who may or may not be a compulsive liar, Rory, my favoritest bitter, crotchety character on Wattpad, and Jade—the heart of the story.

All of the characters that have been introduced are memorable, and all of them are real. Take Jade for example. She hasn't grown up in the same world as the rest of the characters, and when faced with their traumatic, dark reality, she's pretty much falling apart—which is totally, completely understandable, and nothing could be more relatable. Falling apart doesn't make her weak or too girly or pathetic. It makes her human (I sound like a soap opera, and I am not ashamed xD). Rory is a beautiful, wonderful grump and probably my favorite character so far, and I'd be lying if I said I don't dream of having someone like Iko as a best friend.

So, yes, the plot is definitely very dark and intriguing. Never's writing style is exciting and unpretentious, with that raw, beautifully unrefined feel of a first draft, where the ideas are fresh and unhindered by excessive editing. I could go on and on about the witty dialogue or the rhythmic pacing, but really, the characters are the ones who shine. They're criminals. They're warriors. They're your friends, your enemies, your brothers and your sisters. They're (warning: Soap Opera Syndrome strikes again) perfectly imperfect, and I'm definitely excited to see how they handle what's still to come (because I know it's going to be awesome).

I know it sounds like I'm just exaggerating to reward Never for winning the Banana Contest, but I'm really not, I swear. The blood and action is nice, but the characters, man. That's where the soul of the story is, and it's absolutely arresting.

So, Never, congratulations on the win! You definitely deserve it. I can't wait to see what you do next!
