"For a first time misdemeanor, a 450 dollar fine. Vandalism can be a very serious offense, so I hope you've learned your lesson."

"I'm sorry, but we can't afford this. Is there some other way she could pay it off?"

A pause. "Community service. 60 hours, 3 hours a week, 5 months." The gavel hit the block, and it was decided.

"You've been assigned to helping a disabled person for... three hours a week? What you'll need to do is go to their house, help them out with some daily tasks that they aren't able to do like cooking cleaning, it really depends on who you are assigned to. Then they'll send in a report saying how well you did your job."

"What... what do you mean by a disabled person?"

"Well, it might be an elderly man or woman who aren't able to completely care for themselves, but don't want to go to a rest home. Or it could be someone with a disability, like... a loss of limbs, something along the line. You start this week."

Thora tugged her backpack from school off her shoulders, digging through it to find e papers she'd been given. She needed to be at the apartment by 6 to start her community service, and was running out of time.

After checking the address again, she stuffed the paper back in her bag and kept walking down the hallway until she reached her destination- apartment 23.

"Come in, it's open," a muffled voice said from inside, after she knocked.

Pushing the door open, Thora looked around, taking it in. A relatively small apartment, with the front door opening into a little dining area.

She didn't have much time to take it in before a figure appeared from the living area, his hand trailing along the wall and stepping down into the dining room without tripping over the little step. "I assume you're from the community service place?"

  Thora nodded, in shock.

"Hello? I need you to respond verbally. As you may have noticed," Mr.Irwin said, adjusting the dark glasses covering his eyes, "I'm blind."
