~Twelve years ago~
The young mother cluched her newborn baby to her chest, wishing the infant's father was still there. Unfortunately, he had dumped his wife soon after pregnancy, disgusted by the prospect of fathering a child.
The tiny girl giggled, reaching up to her mother's face. Her mother smiled and spoke to the baby.
"Hello little one, I am your mommy." she said. The child dropped her arms, a confused look passing over her face. Then, the door opened. A docter walked in, his face grim.
"What is it? Is she sick?" the mother asked.
"No, not sick. However, there is a problem. She's deaf." the doctor said glumly.
The mother gasped. "Deaf? How? Can you fix it?"
"There is the option of surgery, but it is very expensive. " he responded.
The woman bit her lip, yet didn't say anything. Then she looked at her newborn and smiled softly. "Hope. That will be her name. Hope."
