Chapter Eight
When I got my wings, well, it was safe to say, I had never had a more painful day in my life. It literally jumped from 'normal' to 'Insane'. I now have two scars on my upper back in the shape of little oval stubs. Bree said they were stuck there permanently from the growing and retracting of my wings.
Right now, I'm in the hospital wing. Bree submitted me the day I grew my wings, which was only yesterday. Bree told me how I could retract them and showed me how I could make them invisible to humans. It's way too painful right now to retract them, so they're just 'invisible' at the moment.
I've been in this bed for what seems like forever, although, it's only been a day. If anything though, these scratchy sheets are making my sore back itchy and raw, and my new wings aren't helping much either.
I was sitting here pondering these thoughts, when a knock on my door startled me.
"H-Hello??" I tried to sit up in the bed, but I grimaced painfully and lay back down.
Bree spoke in a muffled voice through the door. "Karen? It's me, Bree. Can I come in??"
"Sure." I said.
She came through the door wearing a black and white preppy outfit. If you could call black combat boots, grey jeans and a French cut black shirt with a red leather jacket, 'preppy'.
"I came to see if you were okay." she gave me a small smile, "So do you like them?"
"Like what?" I coughed into my arm."The wings??" I muttered in between coughs.
"Yeah." she said lightly, sitting on the foot of my hospital bed.
"To tell you the truth, I don't really 'like' them. I just got them last night!! It wasn't exactly painless either!" I flinched as a another agonizing throb erupted from my lower back. "And now I'm still having pains in my back too!" I snapped.
It throbbed once again, and my hand shot to the spot.
"You'll just have to let the pain reduce with time." she said softly, while rubbing my arm in a soothing way.
Bree looked like she understood, and she did. She had grown wings too, but when she had grown them only two days ago!! And she wasn't complaining. .
How come her wings aren't hurting more, like mine???
The thought was swirling through my mind like a wild fire.
Before I could say anything about it, Bree gave me a wait-a-minute kind of look, and her hand stopped stark still.
"Karen," she said with desperation in her voice, "exactly where does it hurt still?"
"My-My back." I said quietly.
"Yes, I know, but where on your back??" she asked, a slightly annoyed tone in her voice.
"Well, it's sort of on my upper and lower back, but mostly in the lower. . . " I trailed off, and looked at Bree. Her face was glazed over in a serious expression. "Bree?? You there??" I said waving my hand in front of her face.
She acted as though my hand was invisible. She was still staring off into space. .
"Lower back??" she squeaked out. Her voice an octave higher than usual. "Lower back??" she asked again, looking directly in my eyes.
"Uuh. . Is that bad?" I asked nervously.
She abruptly stood up from the bed. Her body became as rigid as a board.
"You're not messing with me?" she asked shakily.
I sat up straight in the bed, ignoring the terrible aches in my back.
"No." I said firmly. "But I would like to know what's going on!"
She didn't get to answer because I let out a horrible squeal of pain. I clutched the mattress in my fingers and writhed around in the sheets.
Bree rushed back towards me and touched my shoulder. Her face showed a mix of terror and surprise.
"Can you lay on your stomach?" she asked quickly. It was more of a demand than a question, so I nodded feebly and turned over. I hissed out through clenched teeth, "How in the world is this supposed to help??"
"It isn't, I just need to see-"
I cut her off with another cry of pain. It was the same feeling I got with my first wings. So terrifyingly horrid, I couldn't get my body to suck in air to breathe.
"Karen!! You're growing more wings!!!" she said in high piercing voice, full of shock
I could hardly hear her. I was oblivious to everything at that moment and time. Nothing could push through the shield of anguish blocking my brain.
I was blacking out, the dots were all ready obscuring my vision. . The world was closing around me, and I gave in to the darkness.
